When do the woke police take it too far? Almost always ..they make me barf.
Apparently, a San Francisco school district is being asked that very question by removing the word “chief” from its job titles out of respect for Native Americans according to Daily Mail.
The San Francisco Unified School District has yet to say what word will replace it but added it’s listened to the suggestions of its 10,000 employees.
Neal Alexander Walker, from the Western Institute for Endangered Language Documentation, told Daily Mail he would feel uncomfortable using the word.
Walker’s wife and child are Native American and he’s worked with tribes for decades.
Still, he also suggested the school district may just be trying to grab some headlines with its new edict.
“A cynical person might say that the school district’s measure is more about grandstanding and seeking to appear to do something that costs zero physical capital and can only increase social capital among a certain socio-economic group in the Bay Area,” Walker told Daily Mail.
“However, if students and students’ parents within the district were expressing concerns over the use of the word chief, a more generous person might argue that the district made an appropriate decision,” he said.
The San Francisco Chronicle said the decision came after concerns were raised by Native American community members.
Many people on social media pointed out that “chief” comes from the French term chef, which originates from the Latin word caput and has nothing to do with First Nations people.
