Mathews is obviously more talented. Gilmour was the heart of those Leafs. Similar to Clarke being the heart of the Flyers. Not sure this current team has a heart.
We will find out soon because it's in the playoffs where this team can grow a heart.

Who's a better player? Clearly it's Matthews. But it's not really fair to compare players from different generations. Gilmour was certainly a leader, someone who played with skill and intensity. Matthews is a totally different king of person. His skill set is off the charts and his 200 ft. game is one of the best in the league. I'm just glad he's on our team.

I'll say it again. Had they not lost Tavares in the first game to a very serious concussion and had Matthews not had a wrist injury that prevented him from shooting the puck like he normally does, they easily win the round against Montreal last year.

If they win a series or two (and I sure as hell hope they do) no one will question whether this team's got heart.

They will still have detractors.

The only thing that soothes the savage beast in the NHL is hoisting the Stanley Cup. Doesn't matter how many runner up finishes a team has they are still losers.

31 coaches and GMs should be fired at the end of each season because they're losers.

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
AM is the more skilled player But Killer would go through a wall to win a game.

When I see that attitude from Matthews consistently I will give the nod to him.

If he ever gets there then watch out, He could end up on the Mount Rushmore of hockey greats.

Tampa and this years playoffs are a good place to start.........

If you step back and look at overall effectiveness and productivity, Gilmour was playing with Clark and Andreychuk. Matthews plays with Marner and Bunting.

In this context, I have to give the edge to Matthews as he does so much on his own, and while he gains a lot from playing with Marner, Bunting is a bit of a weaker leg of the stool comparatively speaking. If Matthews had a Dave Andreychuk type of quality player consistently on his LW, imagine what he might do...with Bunting, it's more of a one way street where Bunting benefits more from playing with Matthews and Marner than the other way around.

The game has changed. Players have changed. Rules have changed .

For my money, Killer all the way. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife and they were awesome lovely people.

I saw Gilmour play and he was great, but he was never considered one of the best players in the league. Mathews is considered one of the best. You have to remember Gilmour's peers at the time. Gretz, Messier, Hull, Yzerman, etc. Toronto fans always think their players are the best. Sundin was never the best player in the league.

Matthews is a far more talented player than Gilmour ever was. But as of yet he does not have the intangibles that Gilmour possessed, most notably competitive spirit.
Plus it's a team game and Gilmour's teams were head and shoulder above Matthews" team. Matthews is an extremely skilled player, way better than Doug, but so what? The old team had teeth and grit and capable of winning playoffs series. This team looks pretty, but once it enters playoffs....
