Leafs come out on fire against the Caps so far tonight. 2-0 for the good guys. Matthews gets a point to become the 3rd Leaf in history to hit 100 points in a season.

I love how the team has responded at the end of 2. We’re seeing a very focused Willy and no floating tonight. Hope he keeps it up in the 3rd.

Clifford lost the fight but often as in this case it’s more about responding to a presumed dirty play. I’d have liked to see Simmonds fighting Wilson instead. He had a fight with Wilson before and it was a draw imo. I’d also like to see a Leaf forward bumping into the Caps’ goalie “accidentally’. If you run our goalie we’ll do the same to yours is a more effective deterrent factor.

Always important to keep your Willy up and focused when needed. ;)

Campbell needs to find a way to stay sharp when the Leafs dominate the other team in shots. Leafs should have won 7-0.

Nylander's a game changer when he's got a fire under his ass, he has to be consistent with it, not sure he's wired that way though.
In open ice he is dangerous, and also on the power play.

He is uncomfortable in limited space 5 on 5 hockey and doesn't work hard enough to provide sustained pressure on the forecheck.

Similar to Phil Kessel....one and done flash on the rush.

In the playoffs, where open ice becomes extremely rare, he doesn't have the will to fight through it.

I agree 100%.
He has had games where he's more engaged physically though, limited but still more than his usual game.
I know he got some good points in the playoffs last year, but IMO he played only two really good games, you could see he was cranked up.
But to your point I agree, he doesn't have the will to sustain it.
That's who he is though, I don't know how you change that, that's why I'm on the side of trading him for some other quality
guy with more grit even if we have to give up a few points.
He seems to respond when he gets his butt kicked by the team but that's not a good solution overall.

I couldn't agree more....that cap hit could be used to address areas of weakness ( top 4 d, goalie??, grit and physicality).

I have always felt another team with everything else but lacking scorers would see him as a valuable addition. Just like Kessel....his value in Pitt was high because they had enough of everything else, plus of course 2 of best players on the planet at the time in Sid and Geno.

He will never change, its his hockey DNA.

Covid fucked every event in the world for everybody for over 2 years.

These two were different. The specific timing of the end of a strike and a minor injury had to be perfect to get you. It was just a matter of a few days as opposed to 2+ years.
