The Civil War was fought over slavery. 100 percent. Abraham Lincoln abhorred slavery, but he was not a fool. He knew that if he came out in favour of immediate abolition of slavery that it would not even fly in the northern states and he would never be elected. So he devised a plan to slowly strangle the institution of slavery by not permitting it to expand to the new western states which were being added to the union at the time. By doing so, he knew that in time the number of free states would outnumber the number of slave states and that slavery as an institution in the United States would be abolished.

Here is an excerpt of Abraham Lincoln's Inauguration speech from March 1861. And for your information, this speech was given PRIOR to the outbreak of the Civil War.

And if you factor in the various Declarations of Secession from the southern confederate states, which one by one seceded from the Union all clearly stating that they were seceding from the Union because of their desire to retain slavery, the reason for the Civil War become crystal clear.
