He's certainly having an exceptional season so far.
I was pretty young back then but I thought Bossy had the best wrist shot of his generation. I can say the same for Mathews. Quick release, hard and accurate.

Personally, what I find is that Matthews plays a very strong game positionally. He's not often too far ahead or too far behind the play, and is able to see the play developing and get himself into the right position to make good plays. I don't find he's a generational skater like McJesus, or a super creative playmaker like some I've seen in the past (and Marner today), nor do I necessarily see his shot as being the very best power-wise (like say Ovie). He's above average in terms of accuracy, not exceptional, but to me the goals he scores are because he's in the right place at the right time to capitalize.

Yes, you can usually find him on the right side of the rink, usually about 20-30 feet from the opposing goalie.

He's not a great skater (nor was Gretzky) or very fast. I don't see him carrying the puck much or making passes.

He has a really quick release which is deadly from 20-30 feet out but not a long ranger power shot. I once saw Jacques Lemaire score from about 60 feet out with a blazing slapshot on Tony Esposito.

This guy Matthews reminds me of the great Mike Bossy.
Aside from their wrist shots, they played completely different games.

Bossy was one-dimensional, a pure goal scorer, the best I've ever seen.

Matthews is a better skater, is bigger and stronger, is great on the faceoff, he may be leading the league in takeaways, he backchecks and is a great stickhandler.

It's like comparing Brian Glennie to Larry Robinson because they could both hit big.

One player the Leafs had that knew how to handle Marchand was Komarov. He knew what Marchand was trying to do and knew how to counter him. Not by fighting because they both knew fighting was not their ultimate intent. Marchand resorted to licking Komarov.

For all the cheap shots and suspension worthy plays Marchand doles out he has never had more than 2 fights in a season. This year he has a grand total of 1 vs some guy named Namestnikov in Detroit. Prior year zero fights. His last fight prior to this year was with Nick Ehlers in 2020. Him punching an unsuspecting goalie in the head didn't even lead to any retribution by the opposing team.

Uncle Leo was good…Marchand should have got 3-5 game suspension for licking, it’s like spitting in the guys face.

Wow! I thought he would have been in numerous fights considering his cheap shots.

One shoots left the other right...one plays centre the other right wing...Bossy would never have cross checked a player in the head...

How come no one chimes in that Bossy sucks and should have been traded because he doesn't hit, doesn't fight, and he's too soft? :ROFLMAO:

I wonder if Bossy ever got benched or pushed down the lineup for lack of effort.
Bossy played to his potential, some guys don't.

I thought Carter Hart was supposed to be one of the up-coming goalies…2 terrible goals in a minute.

On those Islander teams, if they thought you weren’t giving maximum effort you wouldn’t get pushed down the lineup you’d be in the American Hockey League.
