The Oscars wanted to increase their ratings. If this was a setup, this certainly will help next year's show. Will could of just told Chris you man not cool my wife has alopecia. Wonder bif the extreme right are saying, "see bunch of n****** st the Oscars. Others might say black on black violence at the Oscars, way to set back the movement Will Smith. Chris Rock should of said, with all the violence going in, maybe you should go to Ukraine Willy and fight. Another possible one could be rich powerful famous black scientologist slaps lesser rich and powerful black man. Really think it had more to do with ego than anything.
The stuff about extreme right wingers and Ukraine is a pretty left field take, but there is one "what if" angle.

I'm not sure that Will would have slapped a white man telling the same joke. I'm certain he wouldn't have slapped a man his own size or bigger telling the same joke.

Rock is small, harmless, and black. So Will slapped him.

we

we do take women seriously but this case isn't the best reaction from will...uou keep justifying his action...it was uncalled for for such a tame joke....Oscar's organizers are already stating there will be consequences for his actions....
@Amanda Labelle hasn’t tried to justify Smith’s actions, in fact I think she has repeatedly said it was wrong. She’s said that there is a reason that the joke may have been hurtful to Jada, and that in turn provided an emotional response in Smith. We can agree that Smith’s action was an overreaction (criminal even) while at the same time agree that a joke about someone’s potentially disfiguring medical condition is out of line. Now that totally depends on whether or not Rock knew about the reason she’d shaved her head. I think that is up in the air, and it’s possible he didnt, as his first response to the smack was “it was a joke about GI Jane”

And not knowing that, illustrates even more why Smith was way out of line.

Both things can be true. Smith was wrong and lost control and hit someone, and that was egregious. And, a joke was told, that a reasonable person might think was out of line, where if it was your wife that was the butt of that joke, in the same circumstances, you might know she’d be hurt by it, and get emotional. To be clear, that emotion is not justification to smack someone in front of millions.

I never said life threatening… but a woman losing her hair, is altering. However…. That is not point. It never was the point.

There are so many things you could have made a joke about picking on Jada. Fucking boycotting one year because her husband was not nominated, when he has been nominated twice previously. The Smith’s offer a lot of material.
I know that you didn't specifically say that. But the way the term is being used, it still sounds rather melodramatic.

Like I'd said, I had it. I had several bald patches much bigger than the the one I'd seen her display. My dermatologist called mine Idiopathic Alopecia Arreata and gave me a few (nasty) shots of corticosteroids into my scalp.

Doesn’t justify smiths actions, but making fun of a medical condition that affects a person’s appearance is shitty. Both can be wrong.
Not the classiest joke by Rock, but women wear wigs all the time. Nobody ever had to know. She never had to feel self-conscious.

But she was open about it and now her husband is open about his character, or lack thereof.

You might imagine tho in a woman who’s personal self image and her professional image is intimately tied to her looks, patchy baldness might mess with your head a bit.

(Fully admit, I am making a HUGE assumption that you aren’t a famous Hollywood heartthrob, or GQ model. 😂).

Not only did she make her condition public, she decides not to wear wigs in public. Rock's joke can just as easily be interpreted as friendly and empowering. She's got short hair and is not afraid to display her condition, so her next stop is playing GI Jane... another tough bald female hero. That's not crass or lacking class. It's just finding a parallel between two strong females that have bald heads regardless of the reason.

Ya I’ve discussed this with others around this, she’s been open about it, and even joked about it. Some people might think it is reasonable to joke about it, since she’s opened the door. The line gets pretty muddy here.

Basically I think comedians should be able to tell offensive jokes. It’s satire, and a lot of people can’t tell the difference between a joke that is satirizing objectionable behaviour/ attitudes vs supporting those attitudes. But also realize and appreciate that a personalized joke might hit a bit too close to home in some circumstances, and own that.

Bottom line of this incident. Smith was 100% out of line, if you balance his act vs a bad / hurtful joke, his reaction was ridiculous. As I’ve mentioned earlier, TBH I think this is a symptom of something bigger, a guy who is on the edge of a much bigger mental health crisis.

If Jada was hurt by the joke, she's weak and should lock herself in a room for the rest of her life. Wear a wig like half the men in Hollywood if you're so bothered, you dummy.

Will is clearly mentally unstable. Falling in love with an aging hoodrat can do that to a man.

Clearly you have not met any women. Lol.
Jada is not just any woman. She's bald and proud of it (rich and famous to boot!). She's a strong trailblazer bringing awareness and acceptance to a disease. She owns her condition and this is clear by how she chooses not to wear wigs to hide it.

Nothing can take a woman like that down besides a light-hearted joke, obviously.

This whole episode shows just how quick we all default to age-old gender roles, despite all the chatter about equality we're fed daily.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but lots of men feel that if their "significant other" is insulted by another man they aren't true men if they don't jump to their lady's defense, especially in public. Sometimes just verbally, but, as in this case, with physical violence, to "punish" the insulter, and defend their lady's honour.

I'm sure it happens in bars everywhere all the time...

Because those age old roles have not completely disappeared. How would you react if an SP you booked, showed up with a military haircut, no makeup, black t shirt, carrhart pants, work boots and fingernails trimmed with her incisors? Things are changing, but expectations for men and women are still pretty different from society as a whole.

just because she made a show doesn't mean chris rock was aware...there was reports backstage that Chris rock saying he wasn't aware....
Well if he was not aware, Will is still not okay but we understand where he was coming from. Jada's condition is important in the story.
