Move the goal posts, claim he was only sorting out the Donbas...and declare victory and independence for the "new"country. Then bide time to undermine Ukraine again and assassinate Zelenskyy.
Yet his original statement talked about Ukraine as a whole being part of Russia, not just a region or two.
Like they way they decided not to capture the cities to "minimize damage" . Very thoughtful of them.
They just took a breather. They will be back after retiring for some light refreshments. At least for now they don't want to liberate the Dundas region.
I just did multiple searches for Russian to English translation of the Russian phrase, "Phase 2" and they all translated that phrase as meaning:
"We lost" or 'We got our asses kicked" or ""We are losers" or "We are idiots".

And why would they broadcast their game plan to the world? What army does that?
Speaking on behalf of the Russian 5th column in Western democratic countries and on TERB, I would have to say,
"No, no, no ..... see this where you Russia haters have got it all wrong. Russia never intended to invade Ukraine and take over the whole country, they just took the wrong turn on the roads leading to/away from Ukraine. A simple wrong turn and what happened, the fascist country of Ukraine started shelling the Russian troops. Russian troops are just defending themselves, that's all their doing. They're trying to leave, but the fascist Ukrainians won't let them. Listen, I watch 5223 channels simultaneously, so I know the whole story. Russia could blast Ukraine off the face of the earth, but they haven't so see what I mean. To highlight their humanity, they tried to save Mariupol from being completely destroyed by the Azov battalion, but try as mightily as they have, they could not stop it's destruction at the hands of those Ukrainian fascists. They could also wipe out the existence of humans from the planet, but they haven't. Now why do suppose that is, huh, huh? I'll tell why and this is supported by the 5223 channels I watch hourly. It is because they are humane and peaceful people who have never hurt anyone, not even zoo animals and people duct taped and shrink wrapped to poles."

or they are utterly deluded in what their capacity are

IDK if they have it in them to attack again in 5 years. There are some serious "capability reassessment" tasks that need to get done.
1. Can ANY army - let alone one as shit-useless at the Russian - take an urbanized European country w a hostile population in an era of drone strikes, squad level comms and javelin and other shoulder-aimed a/t r/l's? I am guessing that the Russian hold the main roads and the fields and thickets are full of Uk. spetsnaz with javelins and comms hunting those Russian afv's and supply trucks. And there's not much the Russians can do to eliminate those intruders. As long as you keep delivering a/t rocket launchers to the Ukrainians, they're going to kill Russian tanks.
2. Can Russia afford to run such a large army and how much would it cost to make it combat-efficient. They have no NCO corps because they don't pay NCO level salaries because they can't afford to pay them. How tf do you solve that?!
3. Replacing those lost tanks and afv's? That's gonna cost time and money.
4. I an guessing that Zelensky is going to get himself some super modern, nice US, Brit and German-made army toys after this and those Leopards and Abrams will kick those old Russian T-72's into borshcht. So the Pooter's task is going to get harder. Plus, the Ukrainians will be feeling pretty good about themselves after this and they're going to be more than willing to go re-match with the Russians.
