Nice gesture. I hope he can afford it.
He's a multi-billionaire, he took his slice of the Yukos pie and bought Chelsea with it, he can afford it.

A Russian holding company owns Everton, at the moment the Uzbek born billionaire Alisher Usmanov's assets have been frozen by the ECB. Everton fans would be overjoyed if the current ownership got turfed.

It's all in the asking price. His current going in price includes the $2Billion he's owed by Chelsea plus a few million more, so he's not likely to 'donate the $2 Billion portion as that is investment capital he wants back, just anything he can squeeze above that mark.

Chelsea is considered one of the "fiefdom" clubs in world football, the others are ManCity, PSG and most recently Newcastle. The Geordie club is owned by the Saudi Sovereign Wealth fund who's CEO is Mohammed "The Butcher" bin Salman. He ordered CNN reporter Jamal Khashoggi dismembered alive, his remains have never been found. In the future, the CL will be contested by these clubs. They have driven up the cost of doing business by 180%, so spare us the crocodile tears Roman.

In response the bigger non fiefdom clubs could come under the control of vulture capitalists. Barcelona is no longer a socio club, it took out a $usa 670 million loan from Goldman Sachs which could give the investment bank a 30% stake in the franchise. The Chinese paper tigers who bought Ac Milan couldn't make their loan payments to Elliot Management, now the hedge fund owns the club.

key is that he will donate “net” proceeds which does make it a bit vague how much he will actually donate.

Is the UK cutting off it's nose to spite it's face. London has thrived by money laundering to Russian Oligarchs.

The latest, Everton owner Alisher Usmanov and United Russia Leader Igor Shuvalov have been sanctioned by Westminster and the ECB. Toffees are dancing in the streets, Usmanov makes Richard Peddie look like Wile E Coyote Supergenius. Both have palatial homes in London.

Have you thought about actually reading the article you are offering your opinion on?

"
He added that the sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process and he will not be asking for any loans to be repaid."

Net proceeds means after transaction costs, paying whatever contractual obligations there are from the hot dog vendor conracts to labour laws that might require staff be paid upon changes of employment status / employer etc.

KEY is that this particular Russian IS taking action to try to help Ukrainians, stop the war etc. Might argue it is in his own self-interest but... at what price does one go against Vladimir "Polonium" Putin?

I read it. I think there is a difference between someone recouping lost investment through repayment of loans specifically, versus recouping lost investment by super inflating the sale value of the club, and then playing the net proceeds card. Not sure in this case I agree with what you have posted as the definition of net proceeds vs. what is likely to be the end state reality.

Well, the article that we both read says he "will not be asking for any loans to be repaid".

As for your agreement on "my definition" of net proceeds, I'll defer to your experience in buying and selling business'. Obviously, I have none.

In any case, don't let me get in the way of your complaining about whatever money they get, and the gesture of this Russian oligarch. A gesture and statement that the sanctions were intended to elicit.

For me, it's a good sign. Perhaps Abramovich's gesture and anti-war statement will serve as an example for other oligarchs to follow.

Speak of the devil, here's the dude Roman Abramovich stole from. Mikhail Khodorkovsky is living in exile in Germany.

He better watch what he says, he could get Novichoked.

You speak like you're someone very important and highly respected that I should somehow already know about, and be immediately deferential towards just because you deigned respond to one of my lowly posts. Are you?
