On a purely military front, Putin has already lost since he was denied the quick victory. From now on, he's back in Afghanistan and the choice of whether to waste Russian men and money on this is his.. He could easily withdraw to the breakaway regions but his ego can't handle that so unless his advisors and other oligarchs influence him, he will end up with a burnt earth policy.

If Russia had a plan at all, it’s chaos now. And civilians are being targeted.
