How do you know what was needed and not needed. The debt is actually necessary to keep the CAD down. If it were not for the debt the CAD would be on par now and manufacturing would be suffering. Also we would have a SHITLOAD more homeless people. Infrastructure is not the only thing. Poverty was a huge focus of the govt and they significantly reduced child poverty which will pay huge dividends for decades. You understand the difference between infrastructure spending and helicopter money, do you? Both help to support low-income people, both lead to inflation and government debt but the first one also results is real GDP growth and lower future government expenditures (that help to repay the debt).
