I understand what you're saying and I think you're getting hung up on the word "sacrifice". I don't believe you are intending to diminish what Fox did, but you're not truly appreciating the sacrifice Terry Fox did make.Raising money is good. Dying s bad. Dying doing something is not sacrificing his life as he would have died anyway. Do not exaggerate the facts and do not use big words when they are not appropriate. He did a good thing, it required lots of effort and dedication, but it was not a sacrifice.
Fox gave up his little remaining time left to take on a feat that raised millions for cancer research, research that would help others but not him. There's an expression about planting a tree whose shade you will never be able to enjoy. That is the sacrifice Fox made. He could have done what 99% of us would do, accept our fate and spend our remaining days with loved ones and preparing for the end. Fox did not. He instead gave up that time to improve the lives of others with cancer.
It is a different sacrifice than a cop or firefighter in the line of duty, it's not the same sacrifice one makes in joining the military to fight for their country, but it is no less of a sacrifice and is why Canadians rightfully view him as a hero. Those who dare touch his statues in any way other than respectful are ignorant and deserve the shame and grief they get as a result.
