Joe Rogan: Podcast star apologises over past use of racist language

The US podcast host Joe Rogan has issued an apology over his past use of racist language on his popular show.
A widely-shared compilation video showed him repeatedly using the N-word in early episodes of his show, which has been running for over a decade.
The 54-year offered his "deepest" apologies and called his past use of the slur "shameful".
Rogan also apologised for making a racist comment about visiting a predominantly black neighbourhood.
He said he "felt sick" watching the compilation, and wished he could take his comments back.
During a six minute video posted to his Instagram page, the MMA commentator also said that he hoped his errors could help to educate others.

"I do hope that this can be a teachable moment for anybody that doesn't know how offensive that word can be coming out of a white person's mouth," the Spotify star said.
But Rogan also sought to defend himself, saying that many of the clips had been "taken out of context of twelve years of conversations on my podcast".
He said that he had often used the slur while quoting comedians such as Paul Mooney and Lenny Bruce, or while discussing the use of the word in movies directed by the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
India Arie, the Grammy-winning artist who first posted the compilation video on her Instagram page, condemned Rogan's use of the slur and said she would remove her music from Spotify in protest.
"He shouldn't even be uttering the word. Don't even say it, under any context. Don't say it. That's where I stand. I have always stood there," Arie said.
Several artists have recently quit Spotify in protest at what they allege is Rogan's role in spreading coronavirus misinformation.

Spotify is thought to have paid more than $100m (£74m) for exclusive rights to the podcast in 2020.

The apology wasn't enough, apparently.

"He shouldn't even be uttering the word. Don't even say it, under any context. Don't say it. That's where I stand. I have always stood there," Arie said.
1: If black people are allowed to use it, it's racist to say white people shouldn't under any context and they use it all the time without blowback. If a word is that hurtful that it must never ever be uttered and black people use it without issue, obviously either the word is not as bad as they claim and they are putting on a show, or if their fellow blacks don't give a shit and get a free pass, that is telling.
2: Context does matter. If someone can't tell the difference between the use of a slur as a slur or the use of the slur in a non hatefulled manner [like labeling the word in a discussion of it's use in a movie, that person is the one who has the problem and I see no reason to cater to their unreasonableness. Even Ice T addressed this in one of his songs where he spend the entire song self identify as such and at the end someone else uses it as a slur and gets gunned down. Context matters. There is a fucking difference and if someone can't figure that out, I don't care if they feel hurt over nothing. Double plus so when their feelings vary so much depending on the race of the person using the term.
3: It's gotten so special needs that people get upset that there are words in Korean and Mando Chinese that sounds like "the word" even though they have completely different meanings. Fuck them. Go ahead and tell the Koreans and Chinese they should change their language to avoid hurting their feelings and see how well that goes.

His ultra right fans will forgive him, but will never forget Trudeau's makeup from 20 years ago.
And Trudeau's fans forgive him would if it was Error O'Tool or Shear Incompetence nothing but resignation for the same actions would be accepted.

It's a world of difference between someone who really doesn't give a fuck about something doing something and someone who presents as super woke doing something.
It's like how banging sex workers is fine for most of us, but if some Jebus cultist who preaches on about family values is found balls deep in someone who isn't his wife, then it is perfectly cromulent to rip said person apart.

One has his own podcast. The other is in hiding while he destroys a country. If Rogan calls everyone a racist while he is president then I'm sure theses videos will resurface like they already have.

Oh, still the left/right bs? Rogan admitted to supporting Bernie Sanders, hardly a righty position. Rogan gets support from left and right listeners because of the format of his podcast. There are a lot of people who appreciate free flow of information even if it's a bs alien conversation, etc.

Maybe you need another protest sent to Ottawa.
Oh wait, all it did was get the conservative leader kicked out.
So much winning.

I totally agree. I made a post a few weeks ago with how ridiculous it is that there are unspeakable words. It is all nonsense.

This one is on the right and a racist.

The difference between racism on the left and racism on the right is when the alt-right go racist, their fans cheer.

Context is important though. There is a difference between yelling fuck when you stub your toe and telling someone to go fuck themselves. One gets pretty much no response while the other has potential consequences.

And you're right that there is nothing unspeakable but there are consequences. The N-word has been used for generations specifically to demean black people. If someone intends to demean people because of their skin tone then they might want to use it but they sure can expect to be treated like an asshole for it. Use of the word in the black community is also a deeply nuanced conversation and there is no agreement about whether it is right or wrong but if a black person chooses to take power away from the word by using it, I'm not in a place to tell them they are wrong.

And when the left do it their fans justify it.
Depends what it is. I don't see anyone on the left justifying blatant acts of racism like Trudeau's brownface but yes, there are other cases where a more Victorian, elitist racism is dressed up in pretty language.

The funny thing about Trudeau dressing up is the people most obsessed with it are the righties (who at the same time think there was nothing wrong with his actions).

He refused to gave Trump in the show....twice. What do you think the ratings would have been like?

He did however have Bernie Sanders on, and stated he would vote for him.

So......your statement is completely wrong.

If you watch his policies and listen to Trudeau, you know he is not racist at all. O'Toole and Scheer? Who knows... they are "old stock" conservatives.
