So, currently I'm living in New Brunswick. The city that this happened in is predominantly French, and I can personally vouch for the fact that I've experienced a lot more racism here than Toronto, or Vancouver. People are generally very friendly, and the younger generation is fine. But the older people are definitely not as open minded.

I was at Wal-mart when a young East Indian did an announcement. You could clearly make out what he said, but he did have a heavy accent. Most likely a recent immigrant.

It was then that a couple in their 60's or 70's scoffed. The wife then says out loud:

"That guy is always yapping away, but you can't understand a word he says." The husband then laughs. They probaby wanted the rest of us to agree, but I just looked down.

I wanted to know if she really cared what he was saying. Maybe if she went to India and tried to make a better living for herself and had to work a shit job to support her family, do you think she could do better in Hindi? The poor guy is trying, and is doing his best. I can't understand people who can't empathise with others and have some sympathy. I'm sure the guy know he has a heavy accent, and I'm pretty sure he really has no choice to do it.

It’s likely that an Indian will be better educated and have a better command of English than the average Canadian.
I heard most East Indians speak about 4 or 5 languages which kind of makes learning a computer language a doddle for them.

The level of contempt some people have for others just because of where they came from, what they look like, or how they sound is disgusting.

Yup, English is usually their third or fourth language. India is a huge country with thousands of dialects. It's also a British colony. So, in order for everyone to understand each other, they all speak a universal language: Hiindi. But most people also know their own local language, which is totally different. Then, they speak English as well, which acts as a secondary universal language. And to top it all off, the usually pick up another language. Maybe their spouse's local language, or that of a neighboring country. Some of most intelligent people at the best schools in the world: MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge are East Indians.

This old lady thought that the poor fellow was to be ridiculed and looked down at. It made me furious.

La la land
Four years ago I was at Golden, BC. At the top of mountain admiring the scenery. I heard an EI heavy accent speaking behind me, it was a family. Could tell they were tourist.
Then I turned around to see the other side of the mountain, and well, I will put this lightly, wife and kids were EI appearance but the father was not. HE was over 65 years old and white. Pure snow white and spoke in the heavy EI accent. I assumed he has lived in India since he was born or a year old and never left the area.

That experience opened my brain.

India is very diverse and so are the people. People in the south have almost black skin and some in the north have such white skin that it is the same as Europeans. Not only that, their features are also European, so they look completely Caucasian

I wasn't there, don't know how well he did but...
1: That's the thing, she wasn't in India, he was here. For public service announcements English or French should be at a certain level. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, again I wasn't there, but it's a reasonable expectation.
2: I was at timmies off the 401 and this guy just couldn't understand the person behind the counter. I had trouble also but as a fat guy I put up with it because fat guy needs food. The customer on the other hand got pissed off. Buddy behind the counter and his white coworker hid behind the be nice because covid sign but his language just wasn't up to snuff.
I know many people are thinking white nationalism because everything is white nationalism. However the customer in question asked if buddy behind the counter knew Gujarati.
3: I know someone who spent a few years at a local collage and a few more in the local work force. For the most part I understand her, a steady diet of bollywood and other local woods probably help. However there are times I have trouble figuring out what she is saying. So we were in the car, I was driving her somewhere and she is not getting through the accent wall and she says that she is done with that, it's on us to understand her accent. Yeah, fuck now. If I am in India and learn Hindi and people don't understand me, it's on me to up my game. It's the sort of attitude you would expect from a stereotypes 'merican.
4: I get plenty of exposure to the accent but there are plenty of people working with the public who are very difficult to understand and have problems understanding people. I suppose if you are desperate to find someone to work minimum wage than well so be it. However I live in a small town and minimum wage jobs are not the easiest to come by.

I would have had a response like "he said the government just ordered that useless old people are no longer allowed out in public without an escort".

The sad part is that his wages are taxed so that these folks get a CPP check.
Canada needs immigrants if we want this country to continue to run and the pensions are paid.
Keep that in mind, the next time you see immigrants doing the hard work for you.

I was born and raised in Montreal, the separatist movement of Quebec is in its death bed but still lingering. I can tell you that it is difficult to find a separatist that is under 25 years old. The vast majority are old geezers. The young people that spout separatist rhetoric are the low uneducated, low classes that look for people to blame for their own unfortunate predicament in life.

I think that this is true of racist as well. They look for reasons to criticize immigrants. More than likely there were very few white people applying for the job at Walmart. Most lower class , educationally challenged white people would rather get BS ( benefit social / welfare ) than work at Walmart.

Racism is for older generations. Modern humans have moved on.
For sure, it can be learned from our parents, but that answer may be a bit simplistic. I think that there is still a lot of nature as well as nurture as the basis for racism.

It is human nature, to a great extent, that fear and distrust stems from things that are unknown/different.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Times and standards may change, but human nature does not.
