Neil Young had his own drug problems which he highlighted in the brilliant but very dark Tonight's the Night album. By the time grunge bands embraced him he was sober.
Not so. Neil was born in Toronto. He grew up in Winnipeg. He attended Kelvin High School.
A few decades ago Kelvin had an alumni reunion. Anyone who ever went there was welcome to attend. A distant cousin of mine, who at the time, lived in the greater Boston area, attended the reunion. This happened in the 1980s, Kelvin booked the Wpg Convention Centre. At one point in the evening the announcer asked if anyone from the 1920s was present, and there was a small number. I also heard that Neil was in attendance. He seems to have made good.
Stephen Stills was part of The Trio, he thought they were a great folk band but he wanted a beefier sound. So he wooed his Buffalo Springfield mate like a hot date and they became The Quartet in the spring of 1969. Graham Nash was dating Joni Mitchell at the time, she wrote Woodstock.
I got my information all wrong, I believed Neil wrote Ohio in the shitter.
The Dec 15 interview is the second one Stern has done with Neil, the first is from 2014. I'm not sure if it's available on YT but it's on the Serius/XM app. Universally respected, a lifelong friendship of musicians 180 degrees apart.

If you watch his performance on the last waltz , someone gave him a line of blow before he goes on stage and you can also see it still it while he is playing and he does look wasted .
