NHL pulling out of Beijing Olympics over Omicron spread, quarantine concerns
Tuesday, December 21, 2021. 12:00 PM EST
The return of the sport's best to the biggest international stage will have to wait after the league and players' association agreed to skip the 2022 Winter Games over the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's pretty much the team that would have played Spengler lead by Claude Julien that will represent Canada. They should still win.

They can use the break in the schedule that was put aside for the Olympics to reschedule games...

I'd say it's likely Russia, Sweden or Finland that win Olympic gold now.

I wonder if Beijing will postpone the games. I know it's rapidly approaching, but I'm sure some press and athletes are not thrilled about the prospect of being in the quarantine overthrew for, what is it, five weeks? It's a shame, i would have liked to see the hockey. Would be some great games with McDavid leading Canada and Matthews leading the US....

Didn't they pull out of the tournament? I saw that a Canadian team is not participating in a series, but not sure which one...

They pulled out of Spengler a day or 2 ago.

who will be player for all the other teams
I suspect no NHL'ers for any team.

A big concern is that if someone gets covid, under Chinese protocol, that player would have to stay in China for 3-5 weeks and there's nothing that the NHL could do about it.

So yeah my initial info was wrong. Julien will still coach (he was supposed to coach the Spengler cup) but the rest of the team will be canadian player currently playing in Europe.

Not official but it's a forgone conclusion. I predict they will have a World Cup in place of the Olympics.

North Korea will win the gold.
This is a blessing in disguise for China. They begged the IIHF to allow their team to be in the Olympic Tournament, said they would devote the resources to train players to be good enough to compete. Except that didn't happen. If the Chinese national team played any team with NHLers, they would get lit up like a Christmas tree. So, while they'll probably get destroyed even against the weaker teams, it won't be as bloody or embarrassing. They don't have the mercy rule as far as I'm aware.

I know the NHL wasn't thrilled about the players going, even though the players really wanted to. But at the same time....fuck China.

Even our Canadian boys from the KHL will man handle China.
