While not an advocate of smoking, having quit to late myself, not a fan of a total nanny state. Can you imagine being jailed for smoking on your own property. Perhaps they should just ban to sale of tobacco within , say, a 2 year period. But as with other drugs banning doesn't seem to work. What's next? Booze?

That is a great initiative. It will go a long way towards eliminate smoking.

Of course, one can grow tobacco in NZ.

A Ban on smoking will be unenforceable and there will always be a demand for tobacco and they will always be a supply

Here
I see a great opportunity smuggling tobacco. Any time a government bans something, some body will take advantage of it.

When I first started my professional work life, there were all these smokers in the office. And they very arrogant about their "right" to smoke. Back then I think 110% of Quebecois smoke. Guy Lafleur and Mike Bossy are two prime examples.

Because banning kids from smoking or drinking works so well.
What are they going to do, toss them in jail [which they can't even keep drug free]

Back in the day smokers were total dicks, now that they have been socially ostracized they don't have the moral authoritah to act up.

Granted now we have another crew who think "muh rights" don't end at your face.

I always figure that if someone smokes around me, I should be allow to whip it out and piss on them. At least my golden stream of vengeance never gave someone the cancer.

In my company, I paid for programs to wean employees off smoking.

One thing I couldn't help but notice the last time I was in Montreal was the number of office workers standing around in clumps outside their buildings huddled together for a cough and a drag. Seemed like a throwback to another time. Not the standing outside bit. Just the smoking bit.

Funny thing is, despite Quebec having the reputation as a province of heavy smokers, it's midway among the other provinces in terms of smoking prevalence, closest, believe it or not, to those health conscious British Columbians.

Actually right now it's not illegal for kids to smoke, it's just illegal for someone to sell them cigarettes, etc. I think it should be illegal, just as it's illegal for kids to drink alcohol. While it won't be 100% effective, it would at least make it hard for kids to stand on the street near schools and smoke. Every little bit will help stop this insidious habit, I'm a ex 25 year smoker, so don't accuse me of being holier than thou.

Apparently, NZ did a study that showed 14 is the age of addiction. If a kid can get through 14 without getting addicted, the chances are that he won't.

SMH....

It is obvious that (almost) no one actually read the article. Just read the headline and had the need to chirp up. No f'ing wonder TERB is becoming more and more polarized.

I'm 100% sure that in the future, New Zealand's remaining legal tobacco retailers will deny sales to adults as their clientele dwindles, to comply with the legislation. Anyone born in 2005 or earlier will also be able to earn a little under the table pocket money by buying smokes for kids younger than themselves, for the rest of their lives. There will always be a small demographic of young people who will smoke BECAUSE they have been told that they are not allowed to.

The same type of age correlation applies to male homosexual acts and, perhaps, age 22. There probably isn't a large percentage of Men Who Have Sex with Men who voluntarily take the plunge for the first time AFTER their college-age years.

It is just tobacco that is to be banned. They can still smoke weed and drink
beer so it is not the end of world to them. And there is also cocaine and other
alternatives to tobacco that will make life worth living.

Point is probably that tobacco is not enough "fun" to risk breaking the law over.
