I never really was a fan of Star Wars, even though I watched several of the movies. To me it was all about special effects, and action. Not my thing. As for Star Trek, I didn’t really watch any episodes, only a few of the later series.
But recently Netflix added the original series. I watched a few episodes and I was immediately enamored. I found it to be extremely original, charming and fascinating. To me this series is more about telling stories in the future that could actually happen, encountering interesting aliens that have different morals, intelligences and motives, and how we humans would react to them.
The stories are filled with interesting moral dilemmas, fascinating plots and twists. I could definitely see now why there are so many hard-core trekkies.
But on the other hand, there are also very hardcore Star Wars fans. I guess the difference comes down to peoples individual tastes.
Thousands of years into the future when humans have the capacity to travel to other galaxies, they will undoubtedly explore new worlds, it is in our DNA. We are curious and inquisitive by nature. I love the mission motto of the Enterprise. What strange new worlds and aliens will we encounter? Will they be hostile or friendly? How will we react to them? What type of relationshop will we forge with them? Allliances?
And considering that this series is about 50 years old is pretty amazing. The technological gadgets are interesting but really secondary to the stories.
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!
