You know what gents, I think we might be ok. The regular season has become a joke as of late. Why finish first when and then get pushed out in the playoffs. Hear me out, why not play the regular season and win enough to get in the playoffs and then push hard, this way over the regular season, you tweak what you need, rest the players you need etc, juggle lines to find the right combo in time for the playoffs and then make a deep run.

The Leafs are going to have a rough first 20 games.
It certainly won't get any easier for them any time soon. After the CHI game, next three up are VGK, TBL, and BOS. This early poor run could definitely trigger some changes for the Leafs. At this point, I don't know if that means player trades, new coach, or new GM.

The problem is that the Leafs are not a team built for playoff hockey, even less so now that Hyman is gone. I stopped drinking the kool aid 2 years ago and what have the Leafs done in the playoffs since? Marner is not a playoff player. Last season the Habs showed that the M and M boys can be neutralized.

If there's a change coming, it should be Dubas first, as well as Shanahan, this is their team.
Keefe is technically sharp, and respected by the players, I don't see him going.

I agree that the loss of Hyman on this team was catastrophic. Fans talk about the heart and soul of a team - I think to a very great extent, Hyman carried that flag for a long time. The impact of his departure cannot be overstated.

You can draft a guy like Hyman with really good scouting and also player development. Something this organization really lacks.

And Kadri maybe?

The Loafs are not making the playoffs, you can't replace key players with dregs, it's never worked. Kyle Dumbass may not be GM for long.

Morgan Reilly will leave this coming summer to be replaced by Vitali Upchuck.

I'd say Kadri played with a ton of passion, intensity and grit, but I don't know that he ever had the respect and trust of his teammates like Hyman did, or provided the kind of consistency and leadership Hyman demonstrated.

Game last night was just sad. Down by two goals, with two minutes to go and goalie pulled, Leafs have Pierre Engvall on the ice. In what world is PE a top six player on any NHL squad? If he's their best chance to score in clutch moments, that's all you need to know about the current Leafs prospects for success.

He just signed a two year extension, has barely 100 games under his belt.
If they try to pin this on him it would stink to high heaven, everyone knows who's responsible.
Well then the Leafs have to find a way out of this. Otherwise winning the draft lottery and drafting Shane Wright will make Dubas look like a genius again.

No need to stop at 2022. Connor Bedard is draft eligible in 2023.

Matthews' contract expires after the 2023-4 season. If Dubas is still around, how much money will he offer Matthews to re-sign?

If the Leafs aren't any closer to competing by then, nothing will keep him here.

Despite the bad start, I don’t have any doubt that the Leafs will turn it around and have a reasonably successful regular season. This core has demonstrated that they’re a perennial regular season contending team. Dubas’ job is safe at least until 2022, I think.

Having said that, I have seen nothing to suggest that I was wrong in saying that Dubas was not the right choice as GM at the time he was hired. In fact I believe this team is now a lot weaker and less promising than what he had inherited. His contract negotiations of the big three, acquisitions and disposals of players through trades/free agencies, and draftings have left this team with underperforming and aging players with no grade A prospects in the system (unless you call Nick Robertson that, which I don’t).

For the first time in over 4 decades I am having a hard time getting excited watching the Leafs’ regular season games. I may even be on the verge of hoping to see Leafs lose so that they will make some significant changes to avoid another heart breaking first round loss. Not making the playoffs may not be the worse case as it may force the Leafs’ top management to make changes to steer this franchise in the right direction earlier.

You are now where I was in September 2019 when I finally stopped drinking the kool aid. The last straw was the signing of Marner for $10.9mm per. Marner is a good player but not $10.9mm per season good. So, I raised the question "Will Leafs Make the Playoffs?" No, they did not.
