A virtual summit on climate change hosted by President Joe Biden continues into its second day on Friday.

The president invited 40 world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss humanity's response to perhaps the most pressing issue of our time.

The world's nations emit hugely different quantities of heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases are contributing to the warming of our planet. But which nations are the biggest greenhouse gas emitters?

Below is a list showing the nations that emit the largest amount of carbon dioxide (CO2)—perhaps the most dangerous greenhouse gas from a climate standpoint—via the combustion of coal, natural gas, oil, and other fuels, including industrial waste and non-renewable municipal waste.

The list was compiled by the International Energy Agency and refers to 2018—the most recent available data. The figures show total CO2 emissions for the year, where GT is an abbreviation for metric gigatons.

  • China (10.06GT)
  • United States (5.41GT)
  • India (2.65GT)
  • Russian Federation (1.71GT)
  • Japan (1.16GT)
  • Germany (0.75GT)
  • Islamic Republic of Iran (0.72GT)
  • South Korea (0.65GT)
  • Saudi Arabia (0.62GT)
  • Indonesia (0.61GT)
  • Canada (0.56GT)
  • Mexico (0.47GT)
  • South Africa (0.46GT)
  • Brazil (0.45GT)
  • Turkey (0.42GT)
  • Australia (0.42GT)
  • United Kingdom (0.37GT)
  • Poland (0.34GT)
  • France (0.33GT)
  • Italy (0.33GT)
  • Kazakhstan (0.32GT)
Adjusting for population size, however, changes the rankings. The list below shows the top CO2 emitters when it comes to per capita emissions. T is an abbreviation for metric tons.

  • Saudi Arabia (18.48T)
  • Kazakhstan (17.60T)
  • Australia (16.92T)
  • United States (16.56T)
  • Canada (15.32T)
  • South Korea (12.89T)
  • Russian Federation (11.74T)
  • Japan (9.13T)
  • Germany (9.12T)
  • Poland (9.08T)
  • Islamic Republic of Iran (8.82T)
  • South Africa (8.12T)
  • China (7.05T)
  • United Kingdom (5.62T)
  • Italy (5.56T)
  • Turkey (5.21T)
  • France (5.19T)
  • Mexico (3.77T)
  • Indonesia (2.30T)
  • Brazil (2.19T)
  • India (1.96T)
According to the nonprofit World Resources Institute, China, the United States and the European Union as a whole account for more than 41 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the bottom 100 countries only account for just under 4 percent of total global emissions.

But it should also be noted that the richest 1 percent of the world's population across countries—those who earn over $100,000 per year—were responsible for more than twice as much carbon dioxide emissions as the poorer half of the world between 1990 and 2015, according to a study published by Oxfam and the Stockholm Environment Institute.

The same study also found that the richest 10 percent of the global population—around 630 million people who earn more than $35,000 per year—were responsible for roughly 52 percent of global emissions during this time.

According to Jimmy Dore (he's loved by a lot on this board) the US army pollutes more 140 countries combined.

But it's Jimmy Dore and he's an idiot.
This sounds like it is probably right in this case given how small many countries are, but even then it wouldn't shock me if it's mostly bullshit.

What global warming ?
According to the satellite data it is -0.01 C cooler than the 1991- 2000 average

The climate has constantly changed over the earths history and will continue to do so independent of mankind's activities
The theory that a trace gas non reactive gas measured in parts per million controls the planets climate is pseudo science and is far more propaganda than real science
The greenhouse theory has never been experimentally proven. It is a theory and one which has been abused

Do not lose sight of the fact all of the alarmist hysteria is based on computer climate models which have proven themselves to be brutally inaccurate and can not even model the impact of cloud formation

CO2 is not a pollutant and is essential for all life on the planet

Global-warming/climate-change has been set in stone as the most
pressing political issue the world is facing. Politicians don't have to
believe it is real (and most of them almost certainly don't live their life
like it is real) to take it seriously. Even the leader of an undemocratic
regime like President Xi understands the merit of setting a target of
net-zero emission in the world stage. A political leader has to be a fool
to deny climate change outright. Meanwhile carbon emission will continue
to rise to no end.

makes some sense. What is the worst thing you can do the the environment in a specific location? Drop bombs on it, call in artillery barrages. Even noise pollution off the scale. Don't see where the US military is any worse than other countries in that respect, only bigger...

Oh...so you were posting this to be funny and not as reliable information...Isn't that what Jesse, Gutfeld, Tucker, Hannity and the gang do everyday?

That's why I'm here, to roll on the floor after all of your posts, jc.
So much unintentional comedy gold.

As the board spokesman for coal miners, are you going to have to go and teach Canadian energy workers the truth?
Can you and larue pick the craziest of your 'scientist' sources and convince them of the errors of their ways?

What tipped you off? My explanation or the name of the site- Babylon Bee? The humorless twits on the left have a problem with the satirical material, apparently- like the NYT a couple of months ago. Now, that was funny. Can't laugh when Joe gets bested by stairs or mumbles incoherently about nothing, can't laugh at the "assault weapons" experts or the doom predictors. Can't even laugh when Chelsea Handler offers legal advice or AOC dispenses economic theories. Fuck!

Humourless Twits? QAnon and Marjorie are real funny...they were all over Andrew Cuomo about inappropriate behaviour but have gone silent when Matt Gaetz gets exposed, FOX doesn’t even talk about it...94-1 on a hate bill, I guess Josh Hawley is pro-hate...Peter Navarro, he must be going for comedy too...

You mean the Ontario coal miners, ROTFLMFAO!!??
Who was talking about imaginary Ontario coal miners, jc?
Or is that who you claimed you were representing when you signed your contract with Ontario to screw the province over on renewable generation?

How about extending that graph beyond 1979 to show what the temperature was like before the industrial revolution?

Humor not hate, buddy. Apropos, I'm not upset with Cuomo hitting on the hired help. I'm upset with the harassment stories killing the real story of Cuomo killing seniors. As for Gaetz, I didn't comment as many did not. Prudent people are waiting for the results of the official investigation and/or charges. Commenting on the allegations from the lefty media is a waste of photons.

how about you guess when satellite data became available ?

surface records before then are a mess
as they do not represent the entire planet, have been fiddled with and are filled with errors such as the urban heat island effect

the satellite graph does show no net warming for the illustrated period despite an ongoing increase in Co2
please explain that?

This should not have occurred if Co2 is the control knob on temperature

why?
There is no real hard scientific basis for that

This is all political theater and it is going to do a lot of economic damage

Satellite data shows the same warming and those records only start in the 70's.

But of course larue thinks that the same people who can land a rocket on Mars aren't smart enough to understand the science of climatology.
