Marleau is only 4 games played behind Gordie Howe, a record that has stood for 41 years.
I think Messier had too much respect for Howe to not go after it, retiring only 11 games short of tying the record.
Jumbo Joe is now 102 behind Howe and might overtake Marleau if Thornton extends two seasons, and if Marleau finallly retires after this season.

Gordie played 419 games in the WHA (which don't count) after he quit the Wings and 2 years off altogether. Even at age 51, his last year in the NHL, he played 80 games. o_O

With all due respect to Marleau, Gordie was, and still is, in a class all by himself.

Well no shit that Gordie Howe is in a class above Marleau and almost every player in the history of the sport but it’s still quite an achievement for Marleau.

I'm shocked that Gretzky is ranked 24 of all time. I thought he was at least top 15.

Thorton and Marleau were drafted number 1 and 2 overall in 1997 and are still playing.

Marleau is just hanging on these days. His game is toast, and San Jose is only keeping him for PR purposes. I really hate how he hamstrung the team cap-wise, cost a 1st Round pick to get rid of, and I'm dubious of how great of a veteran leader he was in the room.

History could be repeating itself. Heard the Leafs traded away this year's first round draft pick for a 33 year old forward who will be an UFA in 2-3 months.

Maybe the Leafs can re-sign Marleau (if he is an UFA or RFA) for next season for minimum wage.

Thornton is done, no way he will reach 102 more games. Most games played is a marginal accomplishment imo. Marleau had a good career but isn't much more than a trivia question.

Nice career that he paved out for himself - good on him.

How much is Patrick Marleau Worth? Patrick Marleau has a net worth of $46 million.
I'd say that that's a pretty good career.

.67 points per game, an average career by nhl standards. A nice career however it will be interesting to see if he's HOF worthy as his stats alone don't qualify him. Does most games played count as hof worthy, we'll see I guess.

500 plus career goals, 1100 plus career points...roughly 1800 games...HOF for sure.

He'll get in for the games played record, he averaged 24 goals a year, plus he's hanging on now just to get the record, not very admirable. Averaged 50 pts a year and had a few point a game years. Average to slightly above average career due to longevity, nothing more.

Tkachuk, turgeon, roenick, fleury not in and marleau in, yeah right, only because of games if he does. He doesn't come close to any of those guys.

Marleau has scored more goals than all those guys...All four players should be in and Guy Carbonneau, Bob Gainey and Clark Gillies shouldn’t be.

Don't be surprised if this keeps him out of the hall, unless he has a master plan of retiring one game short. Hockey is an old boys club and cliquey, don't kid yourself. You have to pass gordie Howe with honour, not by hanging on. Many voters won't be too pleased with this.

I hardly think that voters will hold passing Gordie Howe in games played against Marleau.

Just watch them. It's how he did it that will piss people off, as it should.

Did anyone tweet congratulations to him, I'm not on there, isn't that the norm? Did Howes grandson congratulate him, anyone else?

I the hockey world was silent that tells you their attitude towards it.
