Strom Thurmond, who was once a "Dixiecrat" but a Democrat Senator until....1964, when he switched to the GOP. And why? He was against desegregation. There is a long historical record showing Southern Democrats jumping to the GOP as Kennedy/Johnson pushed through the civil rights laws.
