Again... not being a smart ass but...It is if you will only use a term that also is associated with a 'race' of people.
If you're intentionally using a term that way that means you are using it as a racist attack.
Use Wuhan if you must, because then its just a location and not a location plus a people.
They use UK variant, South Africa variant, Brazil variant... because the variants came from/were first identified in those countries.
They use Spanish influenza, German measles and Japanese Encephalitis because those diseases came from/were discovered in those countries.
Covid 19 came from China, therefore China virus or Chinese coronavirus should be fine. It doesn’t tie anything to any race or people any more than any of the other examples I gave. To some ignorant people, the fact the virus was first identified in or came from China justifies putting the blame on all Chinese people for the pandemic is another issue, as is the fact the Chinese government initially down played the severity of the virus and that all Chinese people bare some responsibility for that. Those are separate issues entirely. Identifying the virus with the country of its origin or discovery nothing to do with race or politics, only with a fact (as per the examples I gave). It has been done in the past and it is still done now. The fact is that this particular strand coronavirus came from China and ground zero and patient zero happened to be in China. There will always be some people trying to use anything to cause divisions, hatred and fear, including the fact that covid 19 came from China. That is not the same as putting blame on Chinese people for the virus.
Regardless, It is fact... Covid-19 came from/was first identified in China.
