It is if you will only use a term that also is associated with a 'race' of people.
If you're intentionally using a term that way that means you are using it as a racist attack.
Use Wuhan if you must, because then its just a location and not a location plus a people.
Again... not being a smart ass but...
They use UK variant, South Africa variant, Brazil variant... because the variants came from/were first identified in those countries.
They use Spanish influenza, German measles and Japanese Encephalitis because those diseases came from/were discovered in those countries.
Covid 19 came from China, therefore China virus or Chinese coronavirus should be fine. It doesn’t tie anything to any race or people any more than any of the other examples I gave. To some ignorant people, the fact the virus was first identified in or came from China justifies putting the blame on all Chinese people for the pandemic is another issue, as is the fact the Chinese government initially down played the severity of the virus and that all Chinese people bare some responsibility for that. Those are separate issues entirely. Identifying the virus with the country of its origin or discovery nothing to do with race or politics, only with a fact (as per the examples I gave). It has been done in the past and it is still done now. The fact is that this particular strand coronavirus came from China and ground zero and patient zero happened to be in China. There will always be some people trying to use anything to cause divisions, hatred and fear, including the fact that covid 19 came from China. That is not the same as putting blame on Chinese people for the virus.
Regardless, It is fact... Covid-19 came from/was first identified in China.

The virus came from Wuhan, China.
So you have a choice, tie the name to a specific location or tie the name to a location and a race at the same time.

You picked option #2.

Sigh... again...
I picked nothing.
I gave many examples of other countries that are tied to a specific ailment. I also gave examples of specific variants of this same virus that are referred to by the country they were identified in.
“China” is not a race. China is a country as UK, South Africa, Brazil and Spain, Germany and Japan.
Identifying an ailment after a country is not new. It’s been done and is still done, as a matter of done with this exact same virus!!
And no! There is nothing about calling China virus that ties anything to any particular race. China is not a race. China is a country. The same like Canada is a country.
Being “Chinese” is also not a race. That’s a nationality. Definitely not a race. As a matter of fact... Chinese nationality is even a matter of some controversy. Not even all Chinese citizens identify as “Chinese” on terms of their nationality, let alone race.
Again - China is not a race. China is country. The Chinese are not a race. Chinese are a nation. Not all Chinese people are citizens of China. Not all Chinese citizens identify as Chinese by nationality. So since neither China or Chinese are a race... nothing is tied to any particular race.
Saying that “China virus” ties anything to any particular race is the same as claiming that German measles are tied to Caucasians. It’s an absolutely absurd claim.

TheDreamer I recommend you stop posting on this subject. Maybe you are new here so will fill you in a little. The politics forum usually consists of the same 10-12 posters who have entrenched views on the left or right. Even with a good argument you will not get them to even consider your point of view.

Run a few of Trump's speeches where he rants about the CHY-NA virus and all the other bad things about China. Failing to discern the racism and hatred makes you pretty tone deaf. Hell, VERY tone deaf.

"Spanish Influenza" was also used against "foreigners" a hundred years ago, BTW.

If you really want to hate on someone who might deserve it, start calling it "the disease spread by air travel" - more clearly descriptive...
Run a few of the Nuremberg speeches but replace Jew with white and you’ve got the doctrine of white privilege pretty much verbatim.

Also, China is one of the most aggressive and overtly racist nations on the face of the earth. You, and a good many other people, had better pull your heads out of your assess or our kids are going to wind up as slave labour for the Han.

I don’t understand what the big deal is. We have a long history of naming ailments after where they were discovered. We still do it even when it come at to this particular one. The fact is - virus came for China, hence China virus. They use terms like “UK variant”, “ Brazil variant”, “Italy variant” or “South Africa variant” because there are various variants that were discovered in those countries, hence the according variants. Variants are not racist but the initial virus is. I don’t see what exactly is the difference is. There are other diseases and viruses that are named after where they were discovered, like “Spanish influenza”, “German measles”, “Japanese Encephalitis”, “West Nile virus” (discovered in Uganda on the western bank of the Nile), Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever aka Ebola (named after the Ebola river in the Congo) or most interestingly “MERS” or “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome” (also a spices of the coronavirus)
Why exactly is this different?
How exactly is this racist but the other isn’t?
Why is this even a thing?

I don’t mean to be a smart ass, I really don’t get it. I just really don’t see the difference. I am actually asking for clarification. How exactly is this different?
Perhaps you are not aware that assaults on Asians have increased tenfold since Trump started calling it the China Virus or Kung Flu. This has not been the case for British, Brazilians or South Africans. Trump was angry at China and maybe with reason, but does that mean US citizens of Asian descent should suffer? He didn't care and the contempt was evident in his tone.

Asian people and not all of them are Chinese nationals are being assaulted. When was the last time a Brit was assaulted for the UK variant? That's the difference.

“Spanish influenza”
That's probably the most racist, the Spanish Flu didn't originate in Spain. It started in Kansas when open grassland was converted to feed lots to supply beef to the Allied soldiers of WW I. The plague could have been worse had they not agreed to an Armistice.

The overwhelmingly accepted is that “Spanish influenza” did not start in Spain. Regardless of whether it started in Spain or Kansas or somewhere else, it was identified in Spain, even though maybe not identified in laboratory/clinical sense but rather identified as a problem. Hence - the Spanish flu. But still not racist. Cannot be racist since Spain is a country and not a race. Spanish is a nationality not a race. Spaniards are part of Caucasian race. And let’s not everyone at me to tell me that there are black, brown, Asian, and whatever else kind of Spanish people. Yes, there are Spanish people, Spanish citizens of every race, the same as there are in almost every country in the world. Still Spaniards are overwhelmingly a European, Caucasian nationality and not a race. Now... naming it the “Spanish flu” more was more incorrect than anything else but still racist.
But unlike the Spanish influenza, Covid-19 originated in China and was identified both in a clinical sense and as a serious issue in China. Nothing to do with race.

As I said before... there are always going to be people, who for whatever reason will use anything and everything to spread division, fear and yes - even racism and hate. Donald Trump is definitely one of those people. An excellent example of someone who figured out how to exploit people sensitivities for personal agenda.
But still covid 19 started in China. Was identified in China.
Patient zero from China
Ground zero in China.
On top of that, the genocidal Chinese government downplayed the seriousness of the situation for a questionable agenda.
Same as Trump did.
And... People that are racist are racist. They were racist before the pandemic and they would be the same people I’m talking about. Anything and everything to spread whatever it is they are trying to spread.
But still... Covid-19 started in China...

The scientific community and the media have adopted the term “COVID-19”. Those that continue to use the term ‘China virus” are deliberately being mischievous and have covert or even overt hostility which they find advantageous in some circle obviously. If another variant comes out of China, then it is not likely to be called the “China variant”. At the end of the day, the PRC is much more devious, racist and totalitarian than just about anything found in the west . China lied and tried to cover up this mess from the onset

The hysteria is only because Trump said China Virus. Had he been in power and said UK Variant, etc., then those words would be added to the racist list.

It is amazing how much power Trump has over people and how they are so easily triggered by him.

Fair point but you will notice that the media has been adjusting their language to be more in line with the scientific community. The last few weeks 've been hearing "the variant first detected in the UK".

It's really does come down to how the media describes it vs. the scientific community.

...
Except in modern scientific usage they describe viruses based on the type and structure rather than suspicions about where they came from (such as the Spanish flu seems to have had its first outbreak in the US).
