i'd be pissed off if i was the parents but...if they're teens right now, how young were they are the time of the crime? they were kids, they shouldn't be locked up.

if it was just bullying and not some real sadistic shit. yeah sticking a stick up some kid's ass and sending the video to everyone is fucked up but i've seen some fucked up shit happen when i was a kid and most of those bullies grew up to be normal people.

bullying is part of school culture. it's the sad reality and all the cringe anti-bullying efforts adults do to prevent it do not work.

every kid fits into one of of three groups: bully, bullied loser, bystander. thankfully, i was mostly a bystander even though i was a good candidate for the bullied loser position.

i'm going to get my son into bodyweight fitness and boxing at a young age. he'll either be a bully or a bystander.

This was not hazing..... the victim wasnt on the team.

Not that being on the team makes a difference.

But this was not a dark secret weve all heard of initiations, hazing etc.

Personally if this is a beginning to an elimination of it im fine. It serves no purpose. Carry bags. Bringing doughnuts. Buying the team dinner. Fine. But when it comes to sexual assault thats just wrong.

Things are changing. Bullying still happens but attitudes towards gay teens is improving (note improving is the keyword...
Not eliminated). These types of changes take decades.

As for your son.... theres another option raise them to be decent or able to stand up for themselves....they dont have to be a bully to avoid being a victim.

Let's examine this... here are just few examples:

Nothing to do with privilege, private schools or otherwise. This is an old stupid sadistic ritual.
It wouldn't be as big of a story if it wasn't a prestigious private school.

Lots of nasty shit happens in highschool, it usually doesn't make the news.

No way. If video circulated of a kid assaultrd with a broomstick came out in a public school people would lose their minds too.

The stuff you dont hear about is because it doesnr have thr social media element. Not that it makes the incident less severe.

Unfortunately news is attractes to sensational stories.

A lot of shit gets recorded and circulated in highschools. I don't know about any other broomstick assaults though, but I'm pretty sure stuff like intoxicated girls doing sexual things with guys for example, is something recorded and passed around very often. There's no way the media will report it everytime it happens.

The James Cardinal McGuigan incident from the 2010's that happened resulted in more arrests and expulsions. But that incident had racial undertones.

I'm not so sure about that. I feel a girl would be seen as a victim no matter which act took place. But my point is that the story would have to be DAMN GOOD for it to be reported in the news, if it's not a prestigious private school.

Create self defense classes for high school kids
Great idea!

I always loved martial arts movies where one guy beats up bad guys with nunchucks.

Oh... wait... those can be turned into anal beads upon failure. Nevermind!

Do you see a reason why an assault based on a school team's accepted hazing and assholes at a party may be viewed differently?

I agree that the profile of the story makes it more compelling for the news but I don't think the criminal charges are based on it.

Underage drunk consensual sex is not news worthy. Sorry but it needs to be apples to apples....rape vs rape.

Great points made by 2 gentlemen. No martial art is going to make up for multiple attackers who happen to br big sthletic and carrying a stick.

The James Cardinal McGuigan incident was based on events that happened at school, and probably some that happened outside of school (I don't remember if anything was alleged to have happened off school property). A girl was apparently forced in a bathroom in one instance. In this case, the alleged victim was a white girl and all the supposed perps and bullies were black, which is why the story made headlines at the time. The school is also at Keele and Finch, giving it another reason for the media to pounce. I knew a girl in highschool at the time and one of the guys that was involved in the incident got transferred to her school. The dude said that the media gave a different account of what happened, as opposed to what really took place.

My point is that sexual assault is not unusual in highschools. I'm sure charges are laid all the time. The media coverage of this kind of thing really depends on how good the story will sell.

The fact these rapists weren't tried as adults is the tell privilege was involved.

They tortured, humiliated and sodomized another human being. For laughs. That shows a fundamental character flaw.

They should have been tried, convicted and sentenced in adult court and labeled as sex offenders.
You forgot to add videotaped as well...its bullshit not just for the poor kid but the parents as well.

I would think that sexual assaults somewhat sanctions by a school team show more of a systemic issue than asshole rapists.
