I know our liberal friends love to bash the police but they should cut the police some slack.

1) Police people are human
2) Policing is an extremely dangerous and stressful job
3) No doubt some/many/most suffer at least some degree of PTSD

Maybe they should take a look at the way they do things...it’s not 1967 anymore.

i'm not a cop-hater. but i don't think highly of them either. they're just people working a job, and some are corrupt.

i don't really know what they'd have PTSD from. most of them aren't doing anything serious.

A LOT of people have PTSD in our society. I even have it due to my violent younger years. We've got people from developing nations, battered women, people that live in low income housing, victims of crime, military vets, former/current abused and bullied kids, people that were part of cults, all of whom have PTSD.

Darts loves police because it's his only way to stick in to black guys, he seems obsessed with them.

Looking more closely at workplace fatalities per 100,000 workers, some industries certainly stand out as more dangerous according to job search engine Monster. These include fishing and trapping; mining, quarrying and oil wells; logging and forestry; construction; and transportation and storage.

Full statistics available here.

US Bureau of Labor Statistics

In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently published a similar list based on 2018 data. The BLS evaluated professions based on fatal work injury rate (calculated per 100,000 equivalent workers) rather than simply workplace fatalities. Which occupations were in the top 10?
  • Logging workers
  • Fishers and related fishing workers
  • Aircraft pilots and flight engineers
  • Roofers
  • Refuse and recyclable material collectors
  • Driver/sales workers and truck drivers
  • Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers
  • Structural iron and steel workers
  • First-line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers
  • First-line supervisors of landscaping, lawn service, and groundskeeping workers

Take your bootlicking to some police groupie forum.

Lots.of cops have PTSD. Seeing dead bodies, dead babies, beaten up women, men and children. Constant abuse from people. Horrible car wrecks. These things have an effect on people.

The problem is many either know they have PTSD and they do nothing about it which is wrong because they have a responsibility to themselves and society to get treatment. I believe this for all people with mental illness who know they have it.

Or....

The other problem is the ones who don't know and police forces not doing enough in the mental health department to support cops.

TPS actually has a cap of like 2K for therapy which will only cover maybe 8-10 sessions. No where near enough.

It's also a good job if you have anger issues and want to take it out on people who piss you off under the cover of your position. During Katrina there were many cases of cops going postal on civilians. One group of young black guys were gunned down by trigger happy cops because of a "misunderstanding". The defense offered was that they were stressed and overwhelmed by the situation they were dealing with. Somebody pointed out that they were hired and trained to deal with stressful situations. Sort of the job description.

All you people bashing cops are gonna be the first ones calling when you defund them and violence and crime goes through the roof !
I don’t live the cops either but when you need them you need them but without them we will have anarchy and the savages will be running the asylum

The vast majority of "armchair" cops have no clue what the police experience. Here is just one example. The cop who discovered Morningstar Keenan's body later committed suicide.

Not a day goes by when one or more of the "usual suspects" do not start another anti-police thread, especially if the cop(s) is white. Let's see how the new "crises support team" work out.

Police have a very difficult job. There are many ways they are at risk for harm, both physically and mentally, and both types of harm can be fatal. Ive known a number of cops personally through my life, and all have been exceptional, stand up people, who are in the job for the right reasons. Having said that, there are some that get into LE just because they are the type that want to kick ass. They are the assholes that were bullies and started fights in the playground at school and later at the bars. Now, they can kick ass with the added authority of a badge and gun. These types need to be weeded out better at the start, as they can not only cause harm to the people they are supposed to protect, but also poison the culture from the inside.

I share your view...most cops are decent humans that are in it for the right reasons, when we are in a jam they are the first ones we call for help...unfortunately the ones we hear about are a very small few that are arrogant, selfish bullies.

Two well thought out posts. Like any human organization, there are a few "bad apples" in our police service but yet that is what makes the headlines (totally unfair). Unlike almost every other job, police often see the worse of humanity and that has to affect their mental health.

"Two-thirds of Canadians have had at least one direct interaction with an officer over the past five years. For most, this was a comfortable experience. Negative experiences vary by age, gender, and ethnicity. "

I think most criminals will say their experience with LE is negative. LOL!

Dangerous might not be accurate; I'd say the potential to be in dangerous situations. There is also a reason why it seems most police forces mandate counselling for cops involved in shootings. I've known a couple cops and a couple people who became cops and the job does take a toll on people's health and personal life. There are also reports that they tend to have a short life expectancy after retirement.

That doesn't change the fact that like in any large group of people, some cops are assholes. The significant difference between an asshole cop and other assholes is the cop's high level of authority means they should be held to a higher standard.
