City of Burlington - Careers

Not sure if it belongs here but thought I ask and if something happens great. I have tried for 3 years going now on 4, every month (no lie) looking at the jobs in the career section within the City of Burlington. I would love to be working for the city I even moved here after falling in love with the city after I visited the Sound of Music festival in 2014 and after 2 years for looking for the perfect home we found it and moved. I even tried to email the mayor of Burlington in the hopes of maybe getting a interview for an ideal position that opened-. As you can imagine I didn't get a response (no surprise as it was a long shot but didn't even get a an interview). Is there a way to get your foot in - there has been many great career opportunities that I have applied for but can't even get an interview. What can I be doing wrong? DM me if you have any suggestions.

I just love the vibe the city has and would love to be part of it. Trying anything and everything to get a job with the City.

Like any City, nepotism or an "in" contact helps. Going from private/corporate to City/Government could be a work culture challenge.

Working for the government requires certain skills. Skills that took me awhile to figure out that the Government seem to search for. Besides nepotism, cronyism, favoritism, excellent short memory, you need certain level of English language skill.

How to get in? well it depends if you willing to follow the following. Online from Mohawk college take By-Law parking enforcer. If you get high grade, apply at City of Hamilton. Then come to COB. after you pass your probation, switch to a different title, and keep changing every three years.

Find out when next elections is. Kiss ass of your local ward Council Members by volunteering during election in their office. Don't give them to much time of your life, but show up with donuts. IF there are 4-6 people running in your ward show up with donuts and be polite, then switch to the next guy. You don't know who will win but you kissed everyone. Also show up for the people running for mayors.

The hospital is another local employer to look at.
Region of Halton, Halton healthcare system are few other nearby "govt" options )

The perfect job opened up last month and the closing was April 21 of the post - its perfect for me as I have the experience and checked all the boxes. Applied for it and have heard nothing. My monthly bump. What does a guy gotta do to get a look. Will keep trying.

Maybe it's time to stop wasting your time chasing some elusive municipal position and instead focus on getting the best value you can for your skillset. You're clearly past the 4 year mark now. What is it that attracts so much attention to a position with the city of Burlington? Do you even have a contract position through a 3rd party under your belt with the city of Burlington so you can at least do a fair comparison of value and evaluation of culture??? My guess is no. So forget Burlington and try and capitalize on the current environment of working from home and nab yourself a lucrative US contract instead.

@MadGeek - no question mate - I have a great position and love what I do - don't get me wrong. Its just that I want something I can't have . All seriousness though, I just love the city and feel it would be a great environment - that's all. If the opportunity comes - great - if not - no sweat - just go about my daily business.
