Working for the government requires certain skills. Skills that took me awhile to figure out that the Government seem to search for. Besides nepotism, cronyism, favoritism, excellent short memory, you need certain level of English language skill.

How to get in? well it depends if you willing to follow the following. Online from Mohawk college take By-Law parking enforcer. If you get high grade, apply at City of Hamilton. Then come to COB. after you pass your probation, switch to a different title, and keep changing every three years.

Find out when next elections is. Kiss ass of your local ward Council Members by volunteering during election in their office. Don't give them to much time of your life, but show up with donuts. IF there are 4-6 people running in your ward show up with donuts and be polite, then switch to the next guy. You don't know who will win but you kissed everyone. Also show up for the people running for mayors.

Maybe it's time to stop wasting your time chasing some elusive municipal position and instead focus on getting the best value you can for your skillset. You're clearly past the 4 year mark now. What is it that attracts so much attention to a position with the city of Burlington? Do you even have a contract position through a 3rd party under your belt with the city of Burlington so you can at least do a fair comparison of value and evaluation of culture??? My guess is no. So forget Burlington and try and capitalize on the current environment of working from home and nab yourself a lucrative US contract instead.

I have had five or six young employees working near me leave our company.
We works almost exclusively for province or municipal as clients.
They went to work for the gov't, often in jobs that paid less at the start.

But they were first gen Canadians of Asian descent, and moms and dads apparently put a big push on them to work for the government side, which in asian culture is apparently quite a prestigious thing.

Having work with the City of Toronto in the past I would suggest reaching out to your local representative and asking them for help. They will want to help someone in their riding and as people on here have mentioned it is who you know. I hated the pressure that councilor would put on the recruiters but it worked.

Fuck I hate that. I applied for an ommpa loompa position, I knew someone who was kinda high up and she was telling me I should just put all these buzz words and phrases in my resume, hard working, dedicated, hates Justin Beiber. Way I figured it, all that proves is that you can spell those words with the help of a spell checker and know they are considered good, but I always figured you need to show you have those attributes rather than just list them. Point out you put in 60 hours a week or did a heavy labour job, that you routinely beat up Justin Beiber fans etc [Sure your honour she was 4 but she was a Belieber so of course I kicked her in the face.... case dismissed]

I tried the buzz word thing, tried reaching out to the mayor (that was a long shot) - can't even get a interview. All good, just keep trying - I continue to look at the careers section every 2 weeks to see, nothing I can do but keep trying - just need a connection on the inside to push my resume through - once I get an interview I know they will love me - at lest I hope.
