According to study had minimal effectiveness in hospitals and homes (long term care homes?)

BUT
NOT EFFECTIVE AT ALL in broader community

They found that surgical or medical procedural masks, which are often blue with three pleats, offer at least “moderate protection” against contracting an infection in a home setting when a sick person and a healthy person are both wearing one. In those situations, the likelihood of contracting an infection is reduced by 18 to 31 per cent, the researchers said.

The researchers were unable to say whether the wearing of face coverings like artisanal masks or other cloth barriers in front of the mouth and nose were effective. They did notice that medical masks seemed to be more effective at preventing infection than cloth barriers in a medical setting, but they would not say whether this would probably extend to the community, citing insufficient research.

Even goes so far as to acknowledge that anti-maskers will "probably" use their findings. I esp love the "other countries seem to think" despite what the SCIENCE in CANADA has shown

“Absolutely, the anti-maskers are going to use it. But you will understand that we must not make science say what it cannot say either,” he said. “But I strongly recommend that you wear it, because in the current context, some countries seem to have shown a decrease in incidence with it.”

Change the stupid title of this thread.

You just posted info that says that masks are effective at providing some protection. Not useless.

English is obviously not your native tongue. Better yet, delete your post altogether to eliminate the further mocking coming your way.

I agree. The title should say- mostly useless. Of course, except for the orthodox, the rest of us knew that a long time ago, even before the masks were mandated.

Re-read what was posted

In a hospital setting medical masks are (at best) 18% to 31% effective (that is less than even half the time, not even 1/3rd hence useless)
Outdoors masks (even medical) provide no noticeable improvement (hence title USELESS)

Non medical masks (which is what majority of people on this board are wearing) do nothing
Not doing anything = useless in my version of english

And if you have issues with the french (I actually linked source so you guys cant cry) there are plenty of newspaper commentaries who either trumpet results or try to downplay them

BTW its beyond laughable the pro-mask crowd gets so butt hurt when their beloved science proves what they think is wrong
Go ahead, find a single Canadian study that says otherwise

I don't have to RE-read anything. You RE-posted and changed the title. It previously did not say some masks, just masks. You are as dishonest and trustworthy as jc.

That bolded line above is either a lie of an interpretation or you prove again that you do not understand English. You changed the wording again. The original post said: "in a home when a sick person and a healthy person are both wearing one In those situations, the likelihood of contracting an infection is reduced by 18 to 31 per cent." That means that if the chance of catching the infection is 50% and it is reduced by 31%, the chance of catching the infection is only 33%. That is why they say that a mask provides, and I quote, moderate protection.

BTW, I laugh at your use of "1/3 useless". More English lessons for you. Useless means of zero use. So your (false) claim of only 31% effective means that it is 69% useless, not 1/3. But as I said you are misinterpreting the results. Regardless, the article said moderate protection which means NOT useless.

As well, I said nothing about "French". The fact that you can't keep track of who said what, shows a lack of focus. Plus French is a proper noun and needs to be capitalized.

You and jc both need to lie, just like the liar-in-chief, you're loser of a hero. People are tired of his lying.

Good god learn to read....

No I did not "edit" the title
The MODS did so

They also ERASED a half dozen nonsense posts (squeezers deletions are most obvious but you can see how much shorter this thread got)
You even responded to jc and his posts are gone too

If I actually edited a post / thread the post will SAY when I edited it (bottom right corner)

Only the real world revisionist seem to know where fiction rules in their little realms.
I invite you to go to my posts from the spring and a rather spirited discussions about the PROPER PPE. There's even a post where I was bragging about securing for myself a supply of the 3M N-95 masks- for which I also was pilloried as I was guilty of depriving our front line workers of the basic protection. Btw, when you see me, I will be the only one around sporting a proper N-95 respirator. Those who fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Btw#2, despite being stuck in numerous line ups in high risk situations forced upon us by the clueless government- like 45min inside the LCBO a couple of days ago- I not only managed to evade Covid, but even the common flu of which I suffer every November/December like clockwork, except this year-thanks to my vigilance, foresight and the PROPER PPE(and some luck, I'm sure).

Good for you if you're being vigilant. The thing is so am i and like you I've stood in long line up, busy stores , in crowds in close quarters and all with a 2 layer cloth mask that fits me snugly and covers the nose and mouth completely. I've neither had a flu, cold or anything else. I will though once again commend you on your vigilance and yes the N95 with a proper fit is a great tool against COVID. I do also have a bag of N95's but I find the soft cloth double and some triple layered designer masks much more comfortable for longer use.

Tj, you on the other hand are a danger to anyone in your surroundings that pays the slightest bit of attention to anything you have to say.

Wow. TJ just figured out that all masks aren't the same. Pretty sure we've known since March.

Properly fitted N95 > Surgical mask > multi-layer cotton mask > poorly fitted N95 > single layer cotton mask > bandanas/gaiters > valved masks

As for the thread title, I have no problem with it. It could even say some masks (eg valved) increase the risk to others. The stupidity is TJ trying to use this to claim we shouldn't wear masks.
