Just want to correct a common misconception on this thread.
Hippos are not the most dangerous animal in Africa (or anywhere else for that matter).
Human beings are.
Species human kills more humans and more animals than every other living creature in the world combined. If you stay out of the way of a hippo, he won't come looking for you. The two legged kind, not so much.

This is not entirely accurate.
Usually they are herbivores when given plenty of food. There have been instances though when hippos fed on meat and sometimes even cannibalism.
They are very aggressive and territorial. Will attack without warning.
Only Alfa is allowed to mate.
When Alfa looses to another hippo, all calves are in grave danger. Newly crowned Alfa will kill a calf so he can mate with hippo cow.
