The bars, restaurants and gyms are the symbolic low hanging fruit that are easy targets for the government to go after in these murky and desperate times. However viritually none of these businesses if they were allowed reopen would be profitable during this pandemic anyway according to most business owners. Generally Canada follows America’s lead without respect to medical standards and protocols and it would appear that the brewing pandemic and political catastrophe south of the border will result in lockdowns at the state level again. Canada is teetering on a nationwide lockdown similar to what is happening in the UK. Without a strong central government structure, provinces are likely to do what Manitoba is doing. The psychological and financial devastation caused by the economic collapse over this coming winter into the spring will be unprecedented in Canada.
I disagree with this.
The restaurant managers and owners I spoke to during the brief re-opening period all said the same thing, "we're not making any money, but at lease we can pay the bills and stay in business" That means a lot to people when they have their life savings invested in a business.
Landlords = they still want their money.
The taxman (City of Toronto) = they still want their money too.
Every supplier, every entity = they still want their money as well.
I do not agree that this will inevitably lead to an economic collapse. I'm actually impressed the the economy, although taking a kick in the nuts, is still functioning. Contrast that to the economic melt down in 2007. Then, the resulting downturn was quick and severe. It would seem that the greater economy is a lot less resilient to a financial sector malaise than a malaise malaise. In addition, as previously stated, 10 people dying a day in Ontario is not reason enough to throw all of society in the dumpster over.
To put it in military terms, these are acceptable losses.
