John McCain was a pragmatist. Back in 2000, he would have made a far better POTUS than the shitbird they got and 9/11 would not have happened.
I think 9/11 was being planned way before then, years and years before...wouldn't have mattered who the POTUS was.

Food for thought. Trump has revolutionized the politicking of the GOP by turning it into a reality TV political party. However bigoted and mean the GOP used to be, they masked it under a veneer of "serious politics". Romney, Rubio, Cruz always presented as serious politicians who might actually have a political platform - even though it was in fact a fraudulent pretense masking a real desire to suck Old Man Koch's dick for donations and engage in transactional politics with the evangelical nuts, anti abortion nuts and assault rifle nuts.
Trump has no platform and just runs as a larger than life TV soap opera character. He projects to his idiot supporters as the "genius outsider" who will "drain the swamp" and "destroy the Deep State". While any educated and sophisticated observer finds this ludicrous, it engages yokels in every hick town in the USA. This is his unique strength.
The question is where will the GOP find another Trump? Rubio and Cruz are just your standard corrupt career dick-sucker politicians. Sure, they can PRETEND to be Trump. But they're not TV stars and the stuff of shabby dime store legends.
If Trump loses, does he re surface in 2024? Well, why not? Unless he dies in the meantime.
If Trump does not run in 2024, does the GOP recruit another Trump? Maybe a country music star? It's pretty clear that ability has no place in the selection criteria for GOP fuhrer-ship.
It'll be hard to find someone who is as much a bullshitter/conman as Trump and the right wing media/social media need someone to say totally outrageous shite that they can turn into the supporters reality.

I dont think the next GOP leader comes from the ranks. It will be another outsider. Another Billionaire probably. At least multi millionaire. And he will be a populist again. More polished. But with similar messaging.
