My Left Foot first drew my attention to him and to this day I think was the pinnacle of his acting endeavors. Pretty much everything he's acted in has been in a leading role with a powerful character. Definitely a case of quality over quantity.

Yes. My Left Foot was fantastic but "In the Name of the Father" is my favourite.

Just once I want to see Tom do a action flick. Or a villain. Has he ever been a villain?
Sort of in Punchline. Pretty good movie, actually, one of his better ones.

The Truman Show. He was superb. All other movies he played a clown in one form or another. The Riddler, ACE Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy, Mr Popper, The Grinch, etc.
His best movie was Man on the Moon. It was scary how well he played the role.

Probably at one point in time was the most woke actor I have ever known about. Although his wokeness was toxic as is evident by the events in his life. It’s disappointing because all he does now is draw anti trump paintings and post toxic comments against Trump to twitter.

If you want to see Tom Hanks out of his element watch The Road to Perdition, director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917) breakout film. Hanks plays a mafia captain caught in a succession war between Old Don Paul Newman and his psycho son Daniel Craig. Great film.

The best performance by an actor in any film is Marlon Brando in the Godfather
No argument here, except that Brando was in the film for 0.5 hour, technically The Godfather is Al Pacino's film. I rate F Murray Abraham higher.

A few years back Seinfeld went for a spin with Jim Carrey in Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee. It was a very revealing look at Jim Carrey. The contrast in comedic styles is not a barrier to these two having some funny conversation. You can see Carrey kind of go into a different place when he takes Jerry to his painting studio. Carrey is actually a talented painter.

A far as anti-Trump paintings, I think in the Seinfeld discussion you can see a Carrey who very much wants to be loved and accepted beyond just being a clown. If you live in Hollywood, what better way to paint and be accepted than political paintings. Incidentally, Carrey says his political painting days are over.

Tom Hanks in an action flick or as a villain in an interesting thought. I'm guessing due to his age seeing him play a villain in the future is more likely. Since he seems to cultivate his nice guy image, it might be awhile before we see him as an irredeemable bad guy.

This year's release Greyhound is listed as action/drama. It's not an action hero vehicle though. The war is the action. I'm looking forward to this movie about an Allied convoy commander fighting off German subs in the North Atlantic. I expect Hanks will give a great performance with a similar stoic portrayal similar to Capt. Miller in Saving Private Ryan.

Where things get interesting is Hanks is the sole screenwriter. I hope he got input from some skilled writers. His collaborative writing effort on Larry Crowne didn't turn out so hot.

James Garner is one of my favorites. He handled drama and comedy equally well. It's been noted that he acted with such style and ease. Perhaps that's why he wasn't nominated for awards more. He made it look too easy.

Incidentally, Garner played Wyatt Earp in Hour of the Gun.

As brilliant, magnificent and mandatory as "Il Padrino" is, the lead is actually Pacino as Michael. That's how the narrative is set up with one of the greatest character arcs ever. Like "Amadeus", both actors (Brando & Pacino) should have been nominated for lead role, not Pacino for a supporting role.

I agree with Von regarding F. Murray Abraham in "Amadeus". His performance is one for the ages as he actually plays 2 roles: the older, fading master as narrator whose tale causes the priest to lose his faith and the younger, envious composer interacting with Mozart's musical genius.

Both characters blend into one of the great studies of 'talent vs genius' and what is fair in life.
