Bitcoin scam??

Have anyone received an email beginning with "Important do not ignore" then Hi, I think you will not be happy...? It goes on say that unless I transfer $2000 bitcoin they will release to my address book sites like this that I have visited, saying they hacked my router...

Thoughts anyone?

I got a similar email several months ago. I deleted it and ignored it. Nothing happened.

It is very common to get such emails. They swear that they installed some sort of trojan ware on my computer and scutinized all the porn websites that I visited. They then state that they have photos from my computer camera and now are demanding a couple of thousand dollars in bitcoins. If they do not receive this payment, then they will submit all the photos to my contacts on my emails.

I responded a couple of times by stating that I sent them the bitcoins. Then there were back and forth emails messages that they did not receive the bitcoin payments and new deadline dates. Kept on saying that I sent more and more of those bitcoin payments and gave them some random confirmation numbers. Finally, I got no more responses after they realized that I wasted their time.

I never understood the paranoia these scams generate

Even assuming everything they said was true (they did hack your router, they did have your address book, they knew what porn you watched)... so what???

1- do you really think they would waste their time sending personal emails to random people in your address book (is it a friend, someone you hadnt seen in 30 years, a co-worker, a random girl you are interested in ect) the scammer has no clue
2- I would guess 99% of the people who get these emails would suspect it was bs / scam and ignore it
3- even if 1 person believe it and ask me I would say no and encourage them to think its a scam / mistake / extortion etc

It is beyond pointless
Who would believe an anon person?

(besides vast majority are scams and they have no clue what you did etc anyways)

Recently the CBC radio had an article regarding this scam.
A business is hacked (Bell in my case) and they steal e-mail addresses and passwords,
The scammer then sells the list of e-mails and associated passwords.
Other scammers then use the list as "proof" that they have hacked your account or computer and usually demand payment in bitcoin. The bait being they know one of your current passwords.
Google "have I ever been pwned" to see if your e-mail information has ever been compromised. It will list any business you have used that has been hacked and your information stolen.
I just ignored the e-mail, deleted it a couple of times and no problem.

So I did the Google thing and my email account was involved in 6 compromises...Bell being one of them as well...
