I love the show Hudson and Rex, brings back fond memories. Once you've owned one they spoil you for other dogs.

Guido came into my family to guard the tool crib where my father worked. I took to training him. German Shepherds will keep you fit, to train them properly they have to be run at least four times a week. A leisurely walk to take care of business wont. It didn't take long for a leash to become unnecessary. After awhile, he was running me. When my father retired, he became strictly my pooch.

The stars of Hudson and Rex, John Reardon and the four legged God called Diesel vom Burgimwald.

I had a German Shepherd/Lab mix. She was a sweet, loyal angel. But, yes, they are really the boss. LOL

Hudson and Rex is shot in gorgeous St John's Newfoundland. It's a Canadian version of a French show called "Kommisar Rex".

Always approach a German Shepherd with your palm up. If you approach one with your palm down, they perceive it as a mouth. The chances of getting bit are good.

Guido used to drive my mother crazy, he would follow her everywhere. "perche questo cazzo di cane mi segue" she would say. In his mind's eye, "boss's mother, must protect".

The notion that you should feed dogs only dog food is bunk, Guido got lots of treats. He particularly loved liver sausage which adds great flavour to meat sauce. I even gave him a slice of Chicago deep dish pizza after I returned home from a trip there. He sloshed and slobbered his way through it. He lived 12 years and 2 months.

Root vegetables yes, other types not so much. Watch the carbs, they give dogs gas.

My brother in law used to own one 25 years ago and everytime i visit them the bark give me chills because it's very loud and really scary...but that dog was really playful and once he gets comfy you will get a lot of slimy saliva all over you...I missed that guy...and even though i didn't own him...he gets excited when I'm around...I sneak some doggy treats for him...

In Denmark, German Shepherds are called police dogs in everyday language, because most of them were working dogs. They are that smart and reliable.

In the middle of the last century they were much smaller, combining the power of a large dog with the agility of a small dog. Now they have been bred to be a rather large dog.

They do need to be controlled. I had a friend in Denmark, who had one that literally drag him along the sidewalk. It ended up biting somebody and had to be put down. It was not the dogs fault.

That's why I ran Guido as soon as he grew from the puppy, that's why he worked for my father, there was no confusion about his role in the family. I'm just taking exception to the "salame baffino" as part of this thread.

My mother usually made extra chicken cutlets and meatballs for him, but I can still hear her say...ce cazzo fai questo cane, mi segue sempre!

When I was a child, my uncle had a great german shepherd, that I loved. When my aunt have him his dinner in a large aluminum bowl, he would take the bowl and carry it to a quiet place in the yard and enjoy his dinner in peace.

Got two of them. One 9 years old, one 8 months. Couldn't ask for better dogs. Only downside is the synchronized farting... enough to peel the paint from the walls.

Cut down on the dry dog food, your walls will thank you. Don't let them near doughnuts, they'll inhale as many as they can!

The show's funniest but toughest scene for Diesel to pull off @ 1:33.
