I had a gas-powered chrome fly by wire spitfire replica you know the ones you would prime it with the fuel that came in a little can then prime the throttle and flick it to start and the engine would smoke on startup and then you adjust the needle valve and the engine would start screaming then hold the little handle and spin in a circle as it roared around you, we would fly it in the hydro field under the power lines, lol, that was before kids were wearing helmets to come down a fucking slide, ah the good old days.

Had the Hot Wheels set with the power booster stations battery operated with the rubber wheels that would fling the cars out at a minimum of at least 350 miles per hour ( swear to God ) then the cars would hit the loop the loop and the whole track would shake, I even possessed the highly coveted rockstar status ultra-cool get all the chicks spare tire Hot Wheel Carrying Case for my ultra car lineup, not the least of which was a hotrod that had a roof that was a chrome german soldier helmet, I also had the Munsters Hot Rod.

Had a huge electric racecar set called Strombecker, the track for it was like 6" wide the cars were just huge with 180 and 360-degree over-under curves ( that was a big deal upgrade ) and we would put oil on the track in the corners so we could drift LOL , imagine that we invented drifting 55 years ago with electric race cars we would block the front of the cars and do burnouts in the oil and I can still remember the smell of those little electric motors roasting, we would put little soldiers on the track and then do mock voices of them begging for mercy as the car hurtled towards them " please nooo please don't kill us ahhhhhhhh " and slam the cars into them at full speed laughing our balls off, at the Hobby Shop we would buy slicks for the rears and use my dads' razors to cut super-futuristic high performance treads into the tires because we were fucking engineering geniuses from NASA. then I upgraded to the HO mini racecar set which was like 1/5th the size of the old Strombeck stuff and these little bastards were fast as rockets and came in an endless array of models.

Remember pogo sticks, rocket kits, Clackers? remember them the two glass balls on strings connected by a ring I can't even explain how they worked but by the time I had mastered them my arm was black and blue, oh and don't forget lawn darts.

Oh and cap guns, remember playing racially motivated cowboys and Indians when we didn't know what racially motivated meant, remember that one fucking guy you would shoot in the head forty times and he wouldn't die because he said you missed? I still hate that little prick, fuckin jerk,,, lol

Oh and I should mention I paid for much of that stuff delivering newspapers, and that was when Saturdays newspapers weighed 37 pounds each because they had the comics and all the flyers in them and I also made some money shoveling the neighbors' driveways in the winter.

Any of you smelly old pricks remember that shit?

I remember all of those.

How about the "SSP Cars", you would propel them by pulling on a plastic "Zip Strip" to make the wheel spin.

The best toy of all from childhood would be the plain card board box, if big enough, it could be a car, a space capsule, a tent , a fort etc.....

Had a ton of Matchbox miniature toy soldiers. Spent hours hand painting the uniforms and equipment per originals. 40 years later, still finding soldiers at the family cottage buried in the sand at the beach where I used to play D-Day, or under the shrubbery all around my parents home where I used to play for hours in summer.

Any of you guys ever did this?: Attach a hockey card to the back wheel of your bicycle with a clothes pin to make a cool motor sound when the card would hit the spokes when you pedalled fast?

Sounds like a privileged childhood. Way more fun than my chasing the dog around the yard with a stick formative years. Luckily we have moved on to sp's.

Yup. Kind of like a small motorcycle sound.

My favorite toy when I was about 8 was a rifle that shot ping pong balls. You had to put the ping pong ball in the barrel, and then do some sort of pump action that I don't recall, and the pumped air would shoot the ball out of the barrel.

Also there was a toy drum set that my parents gave me when I was 6. However it only stayed in my room for 2 days, and then mysteriously disappeared...

Jesus Christ, I had to scroll back up to the top to see if I had started the thread. I'm with you on every level. I will also add, we built our own go-karts to blast down hills and later rode mini-bikes and dirt bikes. Then I discovered it was fun to see how far I could get playing doctor with the girls in the neighbourhood. Good times!

LOL I remember on garbage day scouting on our bikes to find strollers in the garbage so we could build go-carts the old man always had a box of nails and some wood lying around and off we would go

No toys as a little boy Rob? Not even a dinky toy, no bike nothing? You had a dog that is also a privilege many families could never afford. Remember no matter how little you had there will be someone who had less, and to them, you will be privileged. I don't think I was privileged I think I was blessed.

Like yourself, I had quite a collection of toy soldiers, Marx, Britain's, Timpo and later Tradition. I collected and spent hours painting uniforms of US Civil War, American Revolution and Napoleonic Toy Soldiers. I never stopped collecting and now 45 years later, I own a large collection of Trophy, Little Legion and Tradition Napoleonic soldiers as well as King & Country and John Jenkins.

Matchbox and dinky toys were also great! Unfortunately, I lost most of them when we sold our house and moved to a new location in the late seventies along with my comic book collection. I suspect my Mom threw them out while packing, or gave them away to local kids as I was in University at the time.
They would be worth a fortune today.
