The last time I saw Spike Lee he was flipping out cuz his move, The BlacKKKlansman, did not win the Oscar.

Now he’s flipping out over something that seems to have been nothing more than a minor misunderstanding with staff at MSG. Lee’s reaction to this seems way over the top to me?

Why the New York Knicks Are in a Fight With Spike Lee
Nick GreeneMarch 03, 20204:00 PM

A controversy between the New York Knicks and their most famous fan has spiraled out of control. On Monday, video emerged on Twitter of Spike Lee arguing with Madison Square Garden officials. The footage was taken in the bowels of the stadium before New York’s game against the Houston Rockets, and Lee can be heard asking security staff to arrest him.

For a better understanding of the latest troubles in Knicksland, please consult this helpful guide.

What was the argument about?
Lee appeared on ESPN’s First Take Tuesday morning to provide his side of the story. He said that he used an employee entrance on 33rd Street—which he does for every game—and was stopped by a security guard in the elevator. Stadium officials told him that he had to leave and use a different entrance, but Lee believes they were not going to permit his return. In response to their demand, Lee says he put his hands behind his back and told them, “Arrest me like my brother Charles Oakley.”

What’s that about Charles Oakley?
Oakley, a Knicks legend, was ejected from his seat and arrested at Madison Square Garden in 2017. He claims team owner James Dolan, who was sitting four rows ahead of him, ordered his removal. Oakley sued Dolan and MSG, but the suit was dismissed last month by a federal judge who cited “a landlord’s right to remove a trespasser from its property.”

Yeesh. Why would Dolan do such a thing?
That’s kind of his move. When a season ticket holder emailed Dolan in 2015 to complain about the direction the team was heading, he replied, “start rooting for the Nets because the Knicks don’t want you.” Last year, Dolan threatened to ban a fan from Madison Square Garden because he told him to sell the team.

Wow, seems like—
I’m not done. The owner reportedly ordered a young fan to be ejected from a game in November because he started a “fire Dolan” chant. Dolan also alerted his security detail to a teenager who was participating in a stadiumwide “sell the team” chant in January.

Oh, man. Was Lee ejected on Monday?
Nope. He made it to his usual courtside seat. An MSG spokesperson told reporters that it was a misunderstanding and that he had used the wrong entrance.

Ah, so this all sorted itself out?
Not at all. Recall that Lee went on First Take, ESPN’s daytime argument factory. It is not an arena for making amends. He dismissed the “Garden spin” and asserted that he’s used that entrance for 28 years—as recently as Wednesday, when he attended a performance of To Kill a Mockingbird. He said they didn’t tell him about the new policy and believes he’s being “harassed by James Dolan,” though he doesn’t know why.

He asked Dolan at halftime why he was not notified about the new entrance rules. According to Lee, the Knicks owner replied, “Now you know.”

Shouldn’t Lee just be happy that he gets such good seats? As the team’s most famous celebrity fan, I’m sure he and the organization have a nice agreement about that.
According to Lee, he pays around $300,000 for his season tickets.

He pays $300,000. To see the Knicks?
Yes. And he’s been doing this since the 1990s.

The Knicks play the Utah Jazz on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. Will Spike be there?
No. He told the First Take crew that he is “done” going to games this year. The Knicks have only had three winning seasons since 2000, but Lee remained a loyal fixture throughout. This is the ordeal that finally broke him.

Monday marked the first game under new Knicks general manager Leon Rose. Could the team use this opportunity to project a fresh start and let bygones be bygones?
They could! But they didn’t. On Tuesday, the Knicks released a statement accusing Lee of creating a “false controversy to perpetuate drama.”

In the biz, I think they call that “damage control.”
I don’t know which biz you are referring to, but this will certainly make things worse. You may notice that the team pointedly included a photo of Lee and Dolan, likely because Lee said on First Take that he did not shake Dolan’s hand. On Tuesday, Lee texted the New York Times’ Sopan Deb and said that the photo was a false flag.

Say, who won the game Monday?
The Knicks, shockingly. The Rockets are one of the hottest teams in the league right now, but New York beat them 125–123. It was one of their best performances of the season.

Why aren’t people talking about it?
Because the team started a feud with their most famous and loyal fan, remember?

Oh yeah. The Knicks!

The Knicks!

Spoiled entitlement.

This is a huge safety and liability risk for New York Knicks.

What he thinks he is entitled to bypass the system because he is a big fan and has seasons tickets. Bitch please you need a reality check how things work.

Do you watch basketball? Do you know what spike lee means to the Knicks? He’s had court side season tickets for over 20 years. He’s used that same elevator for 20 years. Hes gone to every game even though his teams been a dumpster fire for over ten years. He’s the only celebrity that stuck this horrible franchise. First thing you think of when the Knicks are play at home is where’s spike.

This is another black flag on the James Dolan (owner)era. The Knicks fans can’t wait till he sells the team.

Spike said he’s done for this season an would be back next year. He is the Original global ambassador. Guess where the raps got the idea of bring Drake in.

The guy is a bitch, he was walking out of the Oscars, when he thought he didn't win nothing. Then came back like a little gurl.

Minor? Well I guess so but this is Dolan flexing his muscle at anyone he sees fit. What Dolan( who has a history of going over the top over little things) is upset about is also minor.

So I guess one can say both sides are going way over the top.

And him being favourably associated with the team is a positive for their brand in a business sense. He raises their profile.

What privilege? He should be treated as any fan or customer. Just use the damn right entrance just like any other customers not using the employees entrance. His shit stinks just like anyone else.

Exactly. It's a win/win.

I don't care for his politics mostly but if I owned the team I would be rolling out the red carpet for him.

Same way the Raptors do for Drake.

Guy has literally spent millions on their tickets, is associated with their organization and has been loyal. Why cause a PR shitstorm over this honestly not worth it. Once again the Knicks are in the news for the wrong reasons. I honestly think "Superfans" need more respect. I used to think Nav was kinda privileged and never understood the hype but having seen and talked to him several times and the way he attracts a crowd and inspires energy in the crowd it has changed my mind about him. People see him on TV and associated him with the team yet he is very approachable. In every game there are so many people that come down and take pictures/talk to him and leave with a good memory. Now Spike Lee is different personality but still as a super-fan of the team he should get more respect.

I still don’t get it, though. I know Dolan has a reputation for being petty and childish...but in this case there is no indication of any problem between Lee and Dolan prior to this whole VIP Entrance fiasco...so why would Dolan be targeting the team’s Number One fan? It makes no sense.

I’ve been thinking about this, though, and here is my theory:
1. The Knicks made some sort of change to their VIP Entrance procedures but this change was poorly implemented and caused some unnecessary confusion for Spike Lee;

2. When Lee could not enter the building as he normally does he threw a complete shit fit and eventually talked the security staff into letting him through. He then took his usual courtside seat and watched the game without further incident;

3. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Lee, somebody at MSG had filmed Lee’s freak out at the security staff on their iPhone and posted it on social media. Lee looks like a spoiled, entitled jackass in the vid;

4. Lee goes home, wakes up the next morning, checks his Twitter feed, and goes ballistic again because he looks like such an asshole and the vid has gone viral;

5. Lee calls up Stephen A and goes on his show later that day where he proceeds to attack James Dolan and claims Dolan is persecuting him for no reason;

6. Dolan replies in his typical inept, ham fisted way and gets into a war of words and PR spin with Lee on Twitter...thereby making a bad situation even worse.

Etc.
