Are you a millennial? Don't be so cheap.

We were dinning downtown recently. We got chatty with our server who appears to be of millennial age. She said she is an actress and only serving to keep body and soul together between acting gigs (you might have seen her as an extra in TV movies). Yes, we gave her a nice tip.

I would prefer if restaurants paid a decent wage to wait staff like they do in Europe and tipping would not be necessary at all. It's a stupid concept similar to sales tax on top of the price you see. Recently my barber and mechanic got new POS machines and there is this step where they beg for a tip and I fucking hate that. I don't mind paying more if the service warrants but to be in a situation where I have to process why all of a sudden I need to leave them a tip and will my hair cut or oil change be as good next time if I don't is stupid ridiculous. I am practically forced to give them more money, more importantly I'm competing with other clients for "the best tipper" award who presumably will get the best service. I would rather them be frank with me and tell me that their costs went up and their prices will go up as well, fair and square. I would rather restaurants do the same, if they can't afford to pay decent wages, and include tip in prices. But they don't and the reason is the award I just mentioned they want to have this occasional fucker who will leave 50% or 100% on the table just because he likes the waitress and wants to impress her.

This right here is the problem. Tipping, in theory, should be optional. A way to reward exceptionally good service. In reality, though, if you don’t tip, you get labeled a cheap asshole and you probably shouldn’t come back to that restaurant unless you happen to like spit in your food. You also get shit like Ubereats now making it difficult to not tip (there’s no option to not tip, you have to click “edit” and manually type in zero dollars to not tip). I usually do tip, and I don’t mind doing it most of the time, I have a little more than most and more than I need, I don’t mind helping someone out with a few bucks whenever I’m out to eat. I just shouldn’t be essentially forced to.

The system has become corrupted. What started as a way to reward exceptional service has morphed into a way for cheap assholes to not have to pay their employees and it’s bullshit. Time to bring tipping behind the barn. It’s not doing what it’s supposed to anymore.

I'm no Millennial, I don't tip SP's but I do tip servers. Really can't compare the 2, a solid is SP is making $150 per hr and up (in cash, which I imagine is not being declared...), the server if lucky is making $15 per hour, maybe $20 per hour with tips.

Makes sense to tip a server, makes NO SENSE to tip an escort.

I would put SP's in the same category as lawyers, doctors, optometrists, roofers, furnace guys, teachers, brokers. etc. who are already making good money without tips. Servers and taxi drivers don't make very much and rely on tips to enhance their income.

Overcharging at restaurants

My expectations were not high when I went to a Chuck's Roadhouse a few weeks ago but their commercials made it look appealing and the prices on their steaks looked great. A 21oz. porterhouse was no more than $25 and their steaks are advertised as AAA.

They were fairly busy on a Saturday night and finally a table opened up for us. Just as we were getting seated, this guy (owner? manager?) stops us and says we can't sit there because they needed the table for a party of 21 arriving shortly so we had to sit at the counter, not as amenable for conversing with the rest of our party. The party of 21 never showed.

Most of our main dishes arrived tepid and one was actually cold. But, as I said, my expectations were not high.

Then we get the bill and for some reason I checked it closer than normal and between the subtotal and the tax I see a charge of 3%. I asked the person behind the counter what that was. She said, and I quote "It is an Honest to Goodness fee". WTF?

I paid the bill but before we left I tracked down the manager dude and politely questioned, saying that I'd never heard of that. He said, and again I quote, "It helps us keep our prices down". At that point, still at normal voice level, I let him have it. Your prices are deceptive. We unnecessarily had to sit at the counter, the food was cold and now this stupid, stupid charge and even stupider explanation. He said he was terribly sorry about our experience and then proudly hands me a $10 off coupon for our next meal. (Now that I think of it he had a LOT of those cards in his pocket. Not surprising in retrospect.) I said, but the bad experience was tonight. He said, "That's why I gave you the coupon." Me: "If you were sincerely sorry you would do something for us now." He said that he was sincere and continued to defend. I basically called him out on his bullshit (I did not swear), crumpled up the coupon and saw the incredulous look on his face as I tossed the coupon on a counter and walked out.

Does anybody else have tales of getting overcharged in such a deceptive manner?

I left between 5 and 10%. Aside from the dickhead manager, the wait staff were friendly and handled the less than hot food promptly and courteously. My main issues were with him unnecessarily denying us our table and the duplicitous pricing tactics.

I go to chuck's in brampton as I can walk back to my hotel half or fully gooned. They are cornering the bottom end of the market. They have 6.50$ 30oz drafts and a quite good sirloin burger and fries for 6$. The one in brampton is rough, complete with hookers at the bar. I saw the htg tax also. It's a place to get drunk fairly cheap. Every time I've been in there someone has usually fell over. My kinda place.

I always get the same gay waiter though, which sucks.
