They are trying to create the biggest window they can where they can compete at a price within their budget. Signing a big FA right now could be a huge waste as the young core needs a bit more time. There are always moves that can be made at the trade deadline or when it's clear a few big FA will put them over the top. Right now it's not clear.
Do you not believe the "young core" need veteran leadership?

Not really. What I do believe, is when we get a decent sample size they're going to consistently bat well, the club can aggressively go after front line rotation pitching. Now managed to shed so much dead money they'll have a ton of financial flexabilty.

Who said that they have to be big free agents? There are solid pitchers not named Cole or Strasburg who might sign for 18-20 Mill instead of 30-35Mill. I think a couple of those guys are already gone. Jays could have used Wheeler who signed for 5 years at about 23M/yr.

How do you know our youngsters (Biggio, Vlad, Gurriel, Bo, Jansen.....etc) wont have breakout years in 2020??

Exactly!
Well, Phil, as usual with most things, we are in agreement.

I don't, but what I do know is at the end of last year they still weren't ready. You make that move when they're ready.
So they sign a guy like Wheeler and they have him for 5 years. You don't have to guess when the core will break out.

One thing is for sure, the Jays will need starting pitching if they even wanna break .500 next season.

Right now they got jack shit

Not true. Atkins tells us over and over again what they have and that is flexibility and he is very excited about it. That is not jack shit. Well, if they don't use that flexibility, then I guess it is jack shit.

I would rather them not sign Wheeler, save the money and spend it on a tier 1 pitcher.

IMO, that is a fantasy.
You honestly think a team like the Blue Jays are going to keep their payroll at 55 million? They'll never spend like Red Sox and Yankees, but in the next two years my guess is their payroll will be somewhere around 160 million or south of that. The young core will be making very little of that money.

Well, if they don't spend some money now to make the team respectable, Shatkins will be run out of town. Another 67 win season with under 20,000 seats filled, waiting for the right time to spend big ain't gonna cut it.

I'm gonna list the problems with our starting pitchers:

Shoemaker: Turned 33 two months ago. Injury prone. Had 1 good year in 2014 and thats it.
Buchholz: Free agent. 35 years of age. Doubtful Jays will resign him.
Kay: Had 1 good start in his debut against Tampa, otherwise unproven.
Thornton: Some good starts, some really horrible starts. Up in the air if he can stick around in 2020.
Waguespack: Showed some promise that he could be a #5 starter, but also up in the air if he can ever become a ML pitcher.
Sean Reid-Foley: Also big question marks whether or not he can stick around in 2020, or if he'll even make the team out of ST.
Font: Showed promise. But is he best utilized as a starter, or as a reliever?? We dont know yet.
Borucki: Had a good rookie year in 2018. Can he stay healthy?? Also unproven so far.

Sorry to say, but this cast of guys doesnt inspire a whole lot of confidence in me.
Way too many question marks

You forgot Chase Anderson
4.21 ERA last year. Gives up a lot of homeruns (led the league in 2018 with 30 dingers in just 150+ innings).

But I suppose he's better than Feierabend

BBL seems to be in the minority that the Jays should sit tight and hold on to their money until the exact time the kids bust out.

Jays have inquired on free agent Travis Shaw.

Stick him at 1B. That would be an excellent signing
