Its actually been around for over a year but I think its pretty cool
Robot Hosts, Robot Waiters

I'd say this reinforces the fact that tipping someone to walk food over to your table or read a menu to you could finally be on the way out of here

I went to a steak restaurant in Copenhagen where you filled out a card to order. What type of steak, how you would like it cooked, sides, etc. The waiters brought the food and took drink orders but that was it. It worked and it was a nice place. :)

I also like Brazilian Rodizio style. You help yourself the salad/seafood buffet. The gauchos come around with the different meats and you just have a server for drinks.

Lol. I think not. Good luck finding a robot to match a wine, recommend a scotch, answer off questions about the menu, crack a timely joke.

Or......

Look good in shorts and a tank top while you watch the game.

Or remember how you like your breakfast at your favorite diner.

Or make you look good to that first date.

Lots of bad servers out there, mostly due to bad training imo. But going out is an experience. Obviously the OP doesn't visit any restaurants beyond Hooters to see the difference a good server can make to an evening.

He doesn't care. I don't know why he even cares if this actually comes to fruition seeing as he doesn't tip. If your already not tipping, why do you care if robots take over??

I say bring it on. In fact bring back Automats.

I’ve known many servers over the years. They all take home tens of thousands of $ in cash tips that they never claim on their taxes. They can make a lot of money, enough to develop terrific drug habits.

When they start paying their full share of taxes, I’ll see them as respectable. Like the waiters in France.

I wonder how many SPs declare all their income. So if we replace servers with SPs by your account they never claim income, make lots of money enough to develop a terrific drug habit. And until they pay their full share of taxes you don’t have any respect for them.

Just a thought....

I love this innovation. I don’t see any reason to have wait staff and dealing with their mood swings and grumpiness. I’d rather take it a bit further and have the ability to reserve your table and food to the minute and just arrive and have everything waiting for you and then order additional items through your phone.

I can’t wait until Tim Hortons and McDonald’s get more automated. I love using the mobile app and walking in to both of these stores picking up my order just the way I want it and seeing a huge line of people waiting to waste time and order their coffee just waiting and wasting time. I guess some people like people watching and wasting time.

Because of this mind set, soon we won't have to talk to anyone in a single day. I don't even know if we'll have to leave our houses in 10 years. A self driving car will deliver your food, you use your phone to pay.

Guaranteed if he for some reason found himself having to be a server, he wouldn't claim his actual tip money. Hypocrisy at it's best.

I kind of like how it’s done in Japan. They have to really get people moving there, because restaurants are usually small, and often during peak hours, get people lined up waiting. A lot of places have vending machines, you select what you want, pay, give your ticket to the guy at the counter, they cook it up, bring it to you, you eat, then leave. Simple. Some places, they just bring your bill with your meal, and you pay on the way out. In either case, no tipping, and it’s quick because you’re not sitting around waiting for your bill.

Also, in the Netherlands, they have a fast food chain called Febo. Kind of the Dutch McDonalds. You can get burgers, fries, kroketten, frikandellen, all sorts of little snacks, and they have an automat, so you can just grab what you want and go. They’re also open late. The one in De Wallen is open until 3:00. Had many a late night snack there after a nice session with a window girl.

I'm all for it, tipping waiters is a social construct. Give my fucking tip to the beauty of a chef that made the food.

Chefs are the real stars here. The wait staff is like leaches making profit off their talent.

We go to a place for the food and quality and not to listen to some fake ass waitress make faces at your kids start small talk and act all fake and shit and pretend they care about what you say. Like get out of my space lol

Um, unless you are discussing fine dining again the kitchen is just as generic as it gets. Especially the chains. Everything is prepackaged and weighed. With simple cooking and no variation. The only skill really used is doneness on meat. Everything else is on timer.

And yes that includes right up to the Keg. I watched the switch over.

Most "chefs" are really bean counters more concerned with portion sizing and sameness than creativity and uniqueness.

It's bland corporate eating. Try branching out to small independent restaurants with older servers.

You will see the difference.

Yes!!! Time waste is the main reason I do not go to restaurants. You sit, wait for the waiter to take your order, get drinks, and wait another half an hour (or more) to finally get your meal. It takes 40 minutes from the time you enter into the door to the time you get the first bite. Being able to make an on-line order to get my drinks at 7:30pm and my main course at 7:33pm would allow me to get to a restaurant at 7:30pm and leave it at 8:15 (after the coffee and desert). Add on-line payment to safe even more time. And I'll tip the chef if the food is delivered withing 3 minute framework and it is of the right temperature. Win-win for both the customers and the restaurant.

I do not work in the restaurant industry, but it seems to me that most tips are now paid using a credit/debit card. That has got to leave a taxation trail.

How do restaurants give waiters card-paid tips ...after the dreaded tip out ?

I don’t actually have an issue with tipping for good service, personally, and I’ve certainly had great servers that made the meal more memorable. What I have a problem with is when it’s expected. It’s basically mandatory nowadays, unless you get absolutely horrible service. At that point, just do what Europe does and add a service charge to your bill. It’s insane how entitled some people act here when it comes to tips. I ordered from an online ordering service a while back. Usually I’ll tip the driver a few bucks, but this time I forgot to add it to my order. When the guy arrived, he gave me my food, then just stood in the doorway and asked if I’d forgotten something. I said “huh?” He goes “tip”. He did not get one, and I called the company to complain.

It’s just not a good system. Servers get paid below minimum wage, and tips are supposed to make up the difference (or more than), so a lot of servers seem to feel like if you’re not tipping, you’re basically stealing their money. If you do a good job and deserve a tip, I’m happy to give you one, I just don’t feel like I should be subsidizing your salary.
