Great thread. I too loved the Gloucestor car when the lights flickered. As a kid, it was amazing. The sound, the feel, the rumble. I could have sworn the windows opened too. Can anybody confirm?
Yes you could open the windows, I remember there was a latch or clip to pull it down and push it up.

Great thread anyone remember Glenn Cochrane from CFTO news

I have a photo of myself on a ferry boat taken by my buddy as we were on our way to Hanlon's point to watch the labour day air show and to take photos of the jets and planes that flew directly over head back in 1992.

In the back ground of the photo is the Toronto skyline, you could see the Sky Dome entirely, pretty much no condos, If you were to take the same photo today, you would not see the Rogers Centre at all.

One thing I love and want to do again is take the ferry to and back from Centre Island at night. Those ferry's haven't changed since I was a kid so that bring back some great memories.

Terrific thread, lots of great contributions. Some early sporting memories courtesy of my Dad ...
- Toronto Maple Leaf AAA baseball at Maple Leaf Stadium on the Fleet Street flats at Bathurst and Lakeshore
- Toronto Marlborough OHA hockey at Maple Leaf Gardens on Sunday afternoons vs St. Catharines Blackhawks, Hamilton Red Wings, etc
- Toronto Rifles football team of Continental League at Varsity Stadium
- seeing at least one brawl in the stands at every Toronto Argonaut football home game
- indoor track featuring Olympic athletes at Toronto Star Maple Leaf Indoor Games

"You really struck a memory with the roasted chestnut vendors (I'm assuming you mean with the red carts?) who used to be around the museum and other venues - really miss those guys. I guess they were long priced out of the market. Another old time street vendor who has largely disappeared is the sharpening man. My neighbourhood still has a guy who comes around in the summer. But instead of walking with wheeled sharpener ringing a bell - he's in a truck. But has the same type of bell.
Exactly essguy!!! I remeber going to Yonge and Queen on cool fall/winter days and enjoying the smell and the warmth of those chestnuts. It's funny but when I go there now I still look around like I'm going to find one.

This is a shot in the dark due to the obscurity but does anyone remember Ted's coffee shop at Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton(SE corner) circa 1970? Thanks in advance.

I loved those red carts. Once a year at a church in my area growing up, there some kind of Italian festival. All these Italian guys would come with those red carts that sold caramel apples, candy apples, cotton candy chestnuts, some type of spiraled red candy that was made with the same stuff as the candy apple, and they had few novelty type items they sold. One was this bird whistling thing you put on your tongue. I bought it one year but just couldn't make the whistle noise like the old Italian guys...lol.

I don't know how to post pics, but here's a few pics:

How about if your were a kid going to Canada's Wonderland in the 80's and hearing this song played over and over on the park speakers:

Red House over yonder.
After Hours Restaurants

The original Lichee Garden on Elizabeth St and Meyer's Deli in Yorkville were open late after bar closing time. Lichee Garden had a white grand piano on a raised center stage and Meyer's Deli had after hours live jazz to go with your smoked meat sandwich.

The waiters at LG were old guys who wore white jackets that looked like tail coats with the tails removed. The place had a sort of Shanghai 1930's look. This was before the move to the Bay St Atrium place.

Around this time I received a prospectus asking me if I wanted to buy a two bedroom condo in the first Harbour Front building for $80,000.

Don't forget "Ultra Man" on WUTV Buffalo, on a good day the reception came in pretty clear with minimal snow, lol.

and yes , reality shows has ruined TV.

TV was definitely much better with a few channels, only the top shows, so to speak , made the cut, not unlike as an analogy, the original 6 teams in the NHL

My high school's washroom had instead of individual sinks to wash hands, it had one of those circular sprinkler sinks/trough where you had to step on a circular lever to turn the water on, lol

This could apply anywhere not just Toronto, school ditto machines in which the teacher would run off many copies of a test/exam, when you were handed one, you automatically smelled the paper for that addictive chemical smell!! LOL
