He is the one that stands out to me. The rest are all MEH, from what I have seen this season.
Grichuk has really come around. The rest seem to be decent journeymen. In an ordinary division, they are possibly pennant material in a year or two. The AL-E maybe not so much, as things currently stand.

Took a look at the MLB standings and the big 5 in the AL are so dominant their records are better than all NL teams. Now it is difficult to compare leagues, but the AL is stacked this year.

The road to the World Series will go through Boston, but Houston and Oakland are battling it out for the wildcard.

And what is it with Oakland? They are the yo-yo team of sports. Since running a string of 5 division crowns in the 70's they have captured a division title once every 7 years. And during that stretch it was multiple times. They seem to have horrible seasons and then bounce back to win it all. As a fan I would take that. I also believe they have done this with a modest payroll - This year they are 28th out of 30. Remarkable!

Now they have not won a World Series since the late 80's, but you have to be able to get to the playoffs to even have a chance. I would rather be there with a chance then get there once every 20 years with a chance.

I was looking at the strength of divisions and the AL West has by far the best record. They are 60 games over .500 and the AL East is only 25 over. The NL Central is a solid 38 over. On the flip side the AL Central is 100 games under.

They are a more consistently successful version of Tampa Bay.

In the post 90's free agent era, Oakland is too small a market to compete consistently. They had great stretches in the 70's - the Catfish Hunter / Sal Bando / Reggie Jackson dynasty - and the late 80's - Jose Canseco / Rickey / Mark McGuire.

After this, they have had to scout and develop to put together a competitive team for a year or two. Then they sell their stars off for rookies and prospects and start all over.

Not a bad strategy. As a player is developing into a star, they will earn a lower salary but are motivated to excel and earn the big contract. Trade them when they have that potential for more young promising talent and let someone else pay the large dollar value contracts. Sometime they turn into legit stars, sometimes they are just average ball players being paid too much.

One has to wonder what would happen if the Blue Jays were to follow that strategy with Stroman and/or Sanchez? I am sure the return would be pretty good for either of these players.

Giles looked good on Sunday. Slider was killer, and the last pitch 100mph up and in is unhittable. Jays haven't had a closer with that sort of raw stuff since Duane Ward.

Listen to the FAN 590. Bob McCown talks about it all the time.

I was impressed with his stuff yesterday. He basically blew stuff past guys and/or made them swing and miss. Most Blue Jay pitchers are trying to hit the corners and/or make them swing at a pitch that ends up outside. But Giles threw it right across the plate and they couldn't hit him. Impressive stuff!

When the season's over I want to compare his stats with Osuna (at least for when Osuna was pitching). I didn't like the trade at the time but so far it's looking good.

Osuna has been pitching and he's been lights out.

They're up for arbitration this winter, IIRC. The good / bad - they both had awful years. So they're going cheap. Probably worth holding them into or through next season for the rebound that 1 or both will likely have. I doubt that they would be optimum trade bait at the present time.

After that, it depends on the Borucki, Reid-Foley, Pannone generation whether the Jays can afford to let a healthy and effective Sanchez and / or Stroman go.

I am not surprised. We got way below fair value for him. I imagine he is toxic and the Astros fans are staying away in droves.

Giles for Osuna seems a fair deal.

And if Osuna is lights out and I'm a Stros fan, I'd be pretty forgiving about the domestic assault and pretty accepting when Osuna's lawyer explains that "it's all in my client's past now. He made a bad mistake and he's a changed man. Etc."

So why wouldn't that work in Toronto?
