The good news was that Biagini came in and actually did well.
I like to think of him as Be A Genie. But even having a genie would not help the Jays.
That would be good value. Even better, his salary this season is $4.125MM.
The entire BJ lineup is hitting in the mid .200's and this is mirrored by many of the other teams. Even the Yankees don't have a regular who is batting .300 this year IIRC.
I am guessing that the emphasis has switched from hitting for average to power hitting and OPS in the majors.
And Smoak doesn't have the protection of a first rate BO. Under the circumstances, he is not having a bad year at all.
Biagini is the perfect middle-reliever who can eat up 2 to 3 innings and not give up more then a run or so.

Good point. If Smoak had some protection so the opposition couldn't pitch around him and his numbers would be much better. Defensively he is one of the best at his position.
You are correct in thats his base salary, but he receives a bonus if he gets over 1,1000 plate appearances, which he has passed now at 1,124.
So his salary for 2018 is $8 mill (at least I think I have that correct).

Pick up the option and pay him the 8. They have players that are higher paid and much less productive.

Basically, if he reached that many PA's, (which he has) The team has to pay him 8 million instead of 6 million if they decide to pick up the option on him.

I was nonplussed. Did FB not realize that JPA was perhaps the most despised player ever to (briefly) wear a Jays' uniform. To bring him back and inflict him on the fans as an announcer is just cruel. And the kid was an even bigger asshole as an announcer.
