It's a pipe dream, no way the Leafs are going to pay him $11M-$12M per and for 7 years. The Islanders have the Cap room it only makes sense that Tavares resigns. The talking to 5 teams is strategic move to up his value (and boost his ego) but Lou is too smart for that (been there, done that). Are the Leafs going to mortgage the future (Matthews, Marner, Nylander) for Taveres? Big mistake IMHO.
Ilya Kovalchuk was a brilliant signing by Lou :beguiled:
Sign Tavares to a one year contract at max cap limit then possibly a 7yr extension during the first year.

Brian Burke said Tavares will not sign with the Leafs because playing in Toronto is too tough. To quote John Cleese, "this is, of course, pure bullshit".

That what they said about the Boston Red Sox before 2004. Once they got the WS hump they had no problem getting players to come to Boston. Does Tavares want the challange, and the possibility of immortality, or will he pussy out? If the salary cap keeps going up it will work to the Leafs advantage.

He will pussy out like dozens others have in the past 25 years including pre cap era because unlike the Montreal cheerleader media,Toronto’s sports;especially, hockey media is a cancer and no one in their right minds wants to deal with day in,day out bullshit.
JT will do what the rest in the past have done effectively—-use the leafs to drive up the price and end up elsewhere

Well said,smud
How old is Kadri? I remember not long ago it was Kadri who said he is as good as JT. I still think Kadri has another gear in his game. He is getting better every year he has been with the Leafs. One problem I can see with JT and the Leafs. Matthews development may suffer because of his time on the ice will diminish. There was rumor of a rift between Matthews and his coach on exactly this same issue of minutes play last season!
Kadri is also 27. He was signed for 6 years in 2016for about 27mil. It's probably one of the best contract extensions ever done by Lamouriello. If it going to cost 11 mil to sign Matthews and Tavares, Kadri at 4.8mil is a bargain.

When a player is so gushed over and the event is so hyped, I say pass.

Trade for O'Reilly from Buffalo instead.

I hope I am wrong but I can't see the Leafs will pay anything for high priced forwards. As a fan,you would like them to spend that money on a stud defenceman. Vegas had no stars but just Fleury and you know what they did with their first season in the league. Lots of teams will go after second tier centres after JT is settled by July 1. If JT landed with the Leafs, who would he centred with? Just curious.
Leafs need that stud D-man and Las Vagas makes sense for Taveres, they have cap space.

Part of the process to getting the best contract. He's likely gonna stay in Long Island and for 8 more years.

As long as he makes that same mistake with Tavares and Islanders and not the Leafs. i'm good with that. Anyways Matthews is the Leafs future and franchise player.

Not cap friendly. $7.5M ouch!!!

Kadri can produce that same amount of points and for $4.5M.
This is a wild thought...trade Kadri to the...Canadiens...once Leafs signed JT on Sunday. Well,we know where JT will end up after today. JT likes to inform the Isles of his decision stay or go today. How's about Kadri for Weber? LOL

It's not like that there's a choice. Doughty would be a better fit but chances of getting him as an ufa will be against the odds and even more costly. Trading for him will be costly and weaken the core you'd like to have to be a consistent contender.

If the Leafs don't get Tavares, who's going to play behind Matthews and Kadri ? Very likely they'll have to overpay for other ufa centres, like 5 m for Bozak ? Plekanic ? Moore ?

The option is clear for Tavares.

Does he want to become immortal or does he want to be a mangia cake. Perhaps he should look at a video of what happens Borje Salming comes to town.

I don't know about the Cubs, they're not in our division. Does anyone outside of Boston remember Keith Foulke? In Boston, you can stop an entire street by mentioning his name.

Doughty has agreed to an 8 year extension with the Kings so he’s not going to be available.

Ok. That makes my point.

It'll probably cost 5mil to sign Bozak and 7mil for Stastny, or would signing Tavares for 11mil and a 4th line centre who can kill penalty for $2mil be better ?

It may be a moot point as he'll probably return to the Islanders, but it's certainly worth giving it their best shot.

I'd be happy to sign Tavares, but not so much at the prospect of a counter-move like trading Nylander to free up cap room. Fucking stupid Marleau contract. Hated it at the time and now it's going to cripple us going forward.

Lou signed Marleau so the Leafs can't sign Tavares. How is that for a twist? LOL!

You can't trade Nylander, that would be foolish, the Leafs would miss his passing skills. And it would hurt Matthews.

Logan Couture got 8 years extension from the Sharks. Is that mean it would be down to Isles and Leafs for JT sweepstakes? My hunch is that it will be the Leafs.
