There are a few things I see in sports, especially nowadays that piss me off cause they are nonsensical.
1) Every now/again in a hockey game, you see a goal and then the screen posts a stat "When player X scores, the team record is A-B-C). How does this stat make sense or have any relevance. So Auston Matthews scored in a game. How does his scoring guarantee a win? It doesn't. The Leafs might have won a bunch of games without him scoring or lost a bunch of games where he scored. Most useless stat and ignorance of cause/effect/context
2) Similarly, PPG measures nothing. A guy scores 5 points in 1 game and 0 in 4 other games, so he averages 1 PPG. But he really doesn't. For 4 games he contributed nothing. The only reason to use PPG is to compare apples to apples - two people who have played a different number of games and have different point totals - who's scoring more? That's all PPG measures
3)As mentioned, shootouts in major tournament deciding games.
4) Judgement in certain sports. In Slopestyle, the commentator who presumably knows his stuff says the guys run was good but not the best - same competitor took the gold. Do I think the commentator was wrong or the judges? My bet is the judges are inconsistent.
5) Comparison of scenarios from many years ago. This year the Patriots played the Eagles. They also played many years ago and Tom Brady won. But other than Tom/Bill, they are two entirely different teams. Unless the previous victory was within the past few years, saying a team won/lost their previous matchup years ago is a useless comparison. Only should be mentioned as a historical fact.
