What's the Blue Jays team budget?
They've never come out and stated a hard figure but this year's payroll was just under $174million.
They did have to add additonal salary due to all the injuries. I believe the opening day payroll was about $165million.

The Jays were among the league leaders in attendance this year, with TV ratings still strong.
So there's no reason the budget should be any less next year.

These are the guranteed contracts for 2018:

Russell Martin $20m
Troy Tulowitzki $20m
Marco Estrada $13m
J.A. Happ $13m
Kendrys Morales $11m
Steve Pearce $6.25m
Justin Smoak $4.125m
Donaldson* $22m

Approx. $109million

*Donaldson will get approx. $22million in his final year of arbitration

All the other arb-eligible players and rookie deals will amount to about $20-$30million for 2018 depending on how things play out.

They could give Stroman a backloaded long term deal with a low salary for 2018

They could possibly non-tender players like Carrera, Loup and Koehler who are set for big raises due to service time. Those 3 could earn a combined $10million in arbitration

With Alford, Dwight Smith Jr and Teoscar Hernandez all pretty much ready for prime time, do you really need a Carrera making $2.5-$3million on the roster?
Also, with Mayza and Dermody coming up Loup may be too expensive for a situational lefty reliever. His projected $3million could be used to acquire a veteran FA reliever with a better track record.
Koeohler looks like a keeper though. Can start, pitch long relief, and has a power arm that can be valuable in a middle relief role.

The Jays likely have about $30-$35million to spend this offseason.

Excellent, good to know.

I'm curious to your source for this information?
No source.

2017 payroll was around 177 million, so I'm guessing 2018 will be around $190 to $200 mill

Here is what aa left.

No young position players
No major league ready prospects and limited prospect capital
Oldest team in baseball that is right up against their budget

And yet you blame Shapiro. I don't think he had a good offseason in 2017 (he was great in prior year) but this was not a foundation for any fm to retool.

Your blaming of Shapiro is not justified.
If you look up the stats on the players that AA traded in late 2015, none of them have panned out so far. Had he not made those trades we would have had a bunch of average to below average minor league players.

Instead we ended up with two shots at the World Series.

We did end up with Tulo's contract, but no biggie in the grand scheme of things.

I enjoyed a couple of years of good baseball that otherwise would have been a continuation of the previous 20 plus seasons...

I've said a couple of times that AA knew how to draft and develop. He knew who to trade and who to keep. The prospects are a renewable resource being replenished with each year's draft so a depletion in the farm system is just a temporary situation and in the meantime you have (hopefully) acquired at least serviceable major leaguers to tide you over.

Somewhere but not here.
Top 5 payrolls for 2017:
1 Los Angeles Dodgers $242,065,828
2 New York Yankees $201,539,699
3 Boston Red Sox $199,805,178
4 Detroit Tigers $199,750,600
5 Toronto Blue Jays $177,795,368

The difference between Toronto and Boston is less than David Price's contract. Seems even with Price, Boston figured out how to spend the $$ more effectivly.

Tampa is well under $100 mil and they seem to compete in the AL East - well at least most years.

Uh, okay.

Just as long as that respect continues with another team next year.
Some people just have no class. And if they do, it is of the low kind.

I'd let Loup go. He only seems to be good for one batter, if that. I wouldn't pay any kind of premium for him.

I'd rather try to get Joe Smith back.

EDIT: we got left-hander Tom Pannone and infielder Samad Taylor (both minor leaguers).

Lets hope these guys pan out

Agreed. Glad he's going to be gone soon.
As proof of how out of touch you are in regard to the respect he deserves, just watch the crowd during his last home stand. I predict a huge standing ovation at some point on Sunday. And a position on the Level of Excellence at some point in the future.

I think JB would make a good batting coach

There is no doubt in my mind he is added to the "Level of Excellence". If he doesn't get a standing O on Sunday I will be shocked
I don't get the negative comments. The man was awesome when he was at the pinnacle of his games. We sure were cheering long and loud when he was hitting the ball on a regular basis. I agree that currently his hitting leaves a lot to be desired but he always has given 100% and if you watch him that still hasn't stopped.
I don't expect him back as a player but there has to be a place for him in the Jays' organization if he wants it.

look for a Yankee pitcher to groove one on sunday so JB can get his final homer in Toronto! It was often rumoured that Al Downing grooved one to Henry AAron for his 715 homer. Not to insult any one, but groove means to throw it straight down the middle with nothing on it.
