If you do have binoculars, you can use them similar to the pinhole idea above.

Do not look through them; point the big end at the sun and hold a piece of paper about 10" away from the eyepiece. You should see a bright spot, and with adjusting the focus ring you will see an image of the sun on the paper.

You can try it out in advance. If done right, you'll be able to see any current sunspots on the sun.

Don't get fooled by the Barnyard Dawg on the other side of the fence.

There will be one on April 8, 2024, where the path of the total eclipse will pass much closer to Toronto (Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, etc.), although of course there's no guarantee it won't be overcast on that day.

I think you might burn out your phone's camera that way. I wouldn't risk it.
According to people who know,...most and older cell phones have such a small diameter lense, that they do not gather enough light to damage the sensor.

But some newer ones with larger diameter lenses do in fact gather enough light to damage the cell's sensor.

It has NOTHING to do with the angle of the lens, but its light gathering capability.

Paradise by the dashboard light.

So it's basically like placing Justin Bieber in the middle of Eaton Centre full of pussies and being ripped apart by horny old women.

So if there's a 70% blockage does that mean day will turn almost nighttime for a few minutes????

I just heard a report on 680 News saying something like 'Make sure to keep your pets inside because their eyes can be damaged.'
Does this really need to be explained by a veterinarian?
"They don’t look at the sun anyway so they’re not going to be looking at the sun (during the eclipse)" ... "A human being would be injured because of their curiosity," he added. "But an animal is just not going to do that."

Me and my doggie are both staying indoors this afternoon anyway.

I'm going fishing so in any case..with slight overcast...I might be looking down for some fish or look at the sun through the reflection from the water.

Not here in Toronto. That only happens where it's a total eclipse
Thought so. Thats too bad.

According to radar it should be completely sunny by 2:30 today, so thats good:

You must be far away from Toronto because there is no overcast in S. Ontario

When I was a little child, there was a total eclipse where I lived. My grandfather sooted a piece of glass with a candle. I did the same today so I can see the show.

It is very easy to do, and it works really well.

Just watch cp24 for the partial eclipse visual in Toronto, or CNN for the full eclipse in Idaho as I type this

Too hot to be outside, I'll just look out my window for 65-70% darkness.

There is also the NASA channel.
