Not true. A ton of what I learned in math/business/economics classes both high school and university I use in my job every single day. However, I believe that many streams of university study are useless in the real world. People can't get jobs with a degree in philosophy or art history.

Agreed. Can't tell me a doctor, engineer, trade school grads don't use what they learned in school in everyday life.

Yeah, history or philosophy majors....just keep flushing your money down the toilet. Get used to hearing "I'll have a super size fries and coke with that burger."

Disagree, they use some of what they learned, not most of it. Ask any engineer or MD how much of what they learned they actually use and I wonder what the answer would be.

This guy is blaming the teachers. The fault is the imposed public school system and government imposed ciriculum even in private schools.

Never once in history class did I learn how to organize and effect systematic change. In other words, how to empower yourself. But, I did forget most of what I learned and never used.

How can anybody even ask this question. In this day and age, the only real valuables anybody can have is what is inside his/her head. Everything else can be lost or taken away from you.

It is a variation of the bible Matthews 6.19-34

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20**but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21**For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The most important things taught were mathematics and english, both things you need in adult years.
School also taught discipline and meeting deadlines-2 things you definitely at work.

Do not confuse the meaning of my poll. I am not stating education is a waste but the traditional belief of what education should comprise of needs serious improvement. Most of what you learn in school you never use then forget. Now how can that not need improving?

Here
School teaches us to learn, gives us an appreciation for the arts, history, and the world. If not for school we would be very limited as far as basic skills go. A lot of the stuff that is taut is BS but with out it what would we talk about, how would we find out what carriers we want to get into. Post secondary schools make us take electives to suck more money out of us, but a degree does give someone a far better chance of getting our foot in the door, thats just the way the system works.

It's true it is the way the system works.

I would add the following remarks:
The education system is a big industry. The early elementary school years can be considered gov't run child care services. High school should add more "life" courses too. The education system supports employment to many teachers and administrators and textbook publishers. Honestly how many times does a text book need to be revised.

I completed an MBA @ the best business school in Canada, right near the top of my class. Once in the real world I soon discovered that I had absorbed just enough "learning" to be a danger to myself and others in anything reassembling a business meeting. However I adapted quickly. I kept my mouth shut.

I'm an engineer and I graduated in 1973, so most of what I learned has changed (many times) since then.

But I learned how to learn things. I got an interest in broadcasting which directly led to my first career in television.

And I made friends who I still have 45 years later.

So without a doubt it wasn't a waste of time.
