Don't tell anybody but I heard that the City is tolerating "illegal" rooming houses and basement apartments as "affordable housing". Otherwise, the City will have to spend another billion dollars on "community housing".
Some of this is due to homeowners adapting to the high price of home ownership. Many people are buying homes with a basement apartment in order to help pay their mortgage. The extra income is probably a necessity for many owners.

How some people are coping with home ownership (Dec 12, 2016):

Then when some one dies in a "illegal' basement apartment fire shit will hit the ceiling. Much like what just happened in San Fran.

I'm searching for a buddy of mine. Is it possible to get a bachelor or one bedroom for $900 close to public transit or along the subway line in Toronto or GTA?

Tough to find under $1000. I am sure you have checked out renters.ca and done a price/intersection search for starters.
One of the big management companies raised their min rental to $1067(don't know how they decided the exact amount)
To be fair they have maintained and upgraded the buildings they took over and carrying costs have risen across the city.
rentseekers.ca is also good with the map and hover style.

I think it might be possible to find a $1000 bachelor's apartment near the subway line if the apartment is small, old, and in not the nicest neighbourhood - maybe somewhere on the Danforth line east of Castle Frank, or near Lawrence West.

I live in a one bedroom plus den for $1500 in City Place, not sure why people bash the area but i like it and brand new building with gym, pool etc. Seems reasonable.

$1500 for a studio with no parking. I pay $1750 for a small 1bedroom no parking no storage locker right downtown for my incall. Similar price but includes parking for where I live outside of downtown. Good luck trying to find any nice condo for under $1700 downtown. $1500 you just won't get with all the competition.
Wow so you're paying around $3k/month just on housing by yourself? That's incredibly expensive.

Average price for a one bedroom:

San Francisco: $3500USD

Manhattan: $3400USD

Palo Alto: $3100USD

Toronto is still cheap.
Definitely, but prices are relative. For example, the people in Manhattan paying those prices have jobs that make a ton of money. Large swathes of Manhattan household incomes are in excess of $800k/year

Beware. Just saw on CTV that some condos being sold do not include the built-in air conditioner. You have to pay extra for that. Read the fine print. Maybe some condos don't include water heater, furnace, pipes, windows, walls, ceilings, stairs, electrical wires, etc. either.

Condos or apartments by law have to have a window, heater, electricity, fridge, stove.....etc...etc.

Just being sarcastic. Anyway, people who buy condos should check to see whether the purchase price includes the built-in air conditioner. A CTV viewer said her air conditioner was actually a rental and she had to pay rent on a 15 year contract. I think when you buy a house the vendor has to tell you if the water heater and furnace are rentals.

Question: Does the law require that the condo's fridge and stove must be included in the purchase price?
