I am fed up with standing in line at the check out while someone plays their lottery tickets. I guess the store makes a commission on each sale but why should I stand in line while they cash in their tickets. I don't get it? Then they go on to play more tickets and I just stand there. This is supposed to be an express line?

I hear ya. Convenience stores are the worst. I stand there with just my newspaper and the person in front of me pulls out a folder full of tickets to check. Then after that it's "I'll have 2 of these, some 649,some lotto max,10 dollars worth of these scratch tickets. Then they have to put all those tickets back in their folder, search for money to pay for new tickets.

Don't people know that you can check your tickets at a separate kiosk without using the main terminal at the cashier?

This happened to me this morning. Some old retired clown wanted all his lottery tickets checked, bought some 649 tickets and a few scratch and win tickets. He then paid with a debit card. He did everything in slow motion and stood there until he put his card away and put all his paraphernalia into his belly purse. I jumped in front of him to pay for a single container of milk for $1.99. Frustrating.

In these cases I put the product I intended to purchase on the counter and walk out of the store.

Those scanners that allow people to check their own tickets make a huge difference. I find these days if there is a person in front they have checked it themselves and they are just cashing in.

I get more annoyed when the person behind the counter can't follow the person's lotto requests. I mean its part of their job they should know how to key it in.

Overall lotto doesn't bother me much.

I liked the line from Up in the Air:

"Old people are worse ... they never seem to appreciate how little time they have left."

there are some real assholes that check 30 tickets at an Esso cashier while 10 people are waiting behind them....cashing a bunch of fucking $5 winners .....I think these needs to be banned or stopped somehow by Esso....

Fuji is right. The problem is that the store makes more on the lottery tickets than they do on a sale of merchandise I guess. The checkout is turning into a salesdesk.

Lotteries sure seems like an "old person's game". Pass by any kiosk and it's usually old people. If there are tables nearby, you'll usually see a senior sitting there thumbing through 6/49 tix or doing scratch tix.

I don't see lotteries as fun. More of a "I hope to drop $10 on it and hit the jackpot". The fact lots of old people do it show they are probably broke and hoping they can make a million. 99.999% of them will become more broke doing it. But then the marketing glitz comes out that Bob, a retired guy who worked his life making minimum wage just won $20,000,000. So that creates hysterics that any Bob or Suzy can win big.

But oh, I forgot. The government does have ethics. They have that super tiny line saying... what's the line.... "know your limit". And that's all there is really to prevent Senior Steve from dumping his pension into scratch tix.

Kiosks make commission on purchase and redemption. It can be big bucks if their kiosk/store is a hot spot for foot traffic. Wouldn't be surprised if a store made more money on a daily basis selling lottery tix than selling all their usual variety store stuff.

Government has turned every gas station, grocery store and convenience store into a gambling den running a numbers game. Sickeningly immoral that government is trying to find ways to hook millennials into the lottery addiction now that lottery sales are trending downward.

What's next, encouraging people to buy and drink more alcohol?

I hear ya.

Government is so two faced.

On one hand, they condemn drinking, gambling, smoking and drugs. But as soon as they get a hand in the cookie jar and can control it with laws and huge taxes, as long as the $$$ keeps rolling in it's not so bad anymore.

Some grocery stores sell booze in Ontario. It's a start and will grow.

I'm more referring to the LBCO's ever-increasing marketing and de facto encouraging more people to buy (and therefore) consume more alcohol...despite the incoontrovertible evidence of the societal and individual harm it causes in so many ways.. They are no better than the evil cigarette peddlars of the 50' through 70's.

That's the fault of the cashier. If someone has that many tickets to check cashier should take other orders first before the lottery.
That said I have sometimes on occasion gone to the store to cash a couple of tickets which literally takes less than a minute, on at least 2 occasions recently guy behind me got impatient and left the store! So it seems some people just hate the sight of someone checking lottery tickets ahead of them in the line-up.

It goes both ways. There is nothing worse than non-lotto customers taking their sweet time just before lotto closure.
I waited while customer went through each cigarette in the store before she made selection. All while the clock moved closer to 10:30pm deadline.

Clerks need better control and express lotto purchasers during these times.

Happened to me this morning at a gas station. Guy juggling all his tickets and having the attendant check them. Some won, some didn't. Then he needs to pick out his new ones from under the counter. His final bill came to 80 cents while 6 people waited to pay for their gas.

Avoid Thursdays as that's after the 6/49 draw. Beyond that draws are friday/saturdays so the stations won't be as busy on weekend days.

I used to just hand whatever I was purchasing to the guy. Usually they took care of me at the same time. Especially if they are doing the time wasting stuff.
