You still have to mail in a passport application including the 2 photos. Can't do that online yet. Shipping and receiving using Canada Post is almost always cheaper than the couriers. If you're not home you can go to a nearby post office, which pretty much everyone in Canada has close by. Courier depots are usually out of the way.

You are right though that the letter mail business is totally dead. You only get junk mail or community papers that way. You can receive and pay just virtually all other bills or statements online these days.

Also, banks still cut a physical cheque and send it by Canada Post when you transfer RRSP cash from one bank to another bank. I have no idea why in 2016 they can't send money electronically. Actually, why don't the banks empower the customer and allow them to do the transfer themselves online?

I think they want to start delivering parcels in the evening and Saturdays, and maybe reduce mail to 3 days a week. They want to go from defined benefit pension to defined contribution pension and the union doesn't like that one.

I believe there is an RSP transfer form you can fill out online or you can call them and they'll do the transfer for you. If they do indeed cut a paper check and mail it to you my guess is that it's just to discourage people to move cash between institutions. That's how they would lock you into one bank.

Not all banks accept the transfer form online. I know of at least one that requires a paper form. Yes, they will send the money to the other institution but will take their sweet time about it and pay no interest. Plus, let's not forget the transfer fee.

One good thing about the TFSA is that you can withdraw the money personally and then re-contribute it to the other institution the following year (too bad not the same year). You control the process and the timing.

Amazon probably has a contingency plan in place during potential strikes by postal/mail services around the world.

As for me, I only receive certain magazine subscriptions & my monthly Metropass in the mail. All of my bills are handled electronically (as is my T4 statement). And I'm sure TTC will have a contingency plan in place for Metropass Discount Plan holders.

Yep, banks always like dragging their heels when you want to move your money around.

Good point about the Metropass. Soon that won't be a problem as Presto gets rolled out.

Are they still called mailmen or the mailman, surprised that hasn't gone gender neutral yet, or has it?

Another service that is going to be extinct. Amazon and other mail order companies will simply find other sources for delivery.

Personally I wouldn't care if service was cut back as I only check the mailbox once a week anyways.

Canada Post is a perfect example of a typical government service that can be sourced out and administered in a more realistic wage earning environment.

Hopefully they go on strike...They will quickly learn how unimportant and unessential they are.
